Raiders go 1-2; Kalist goes 3-0 in doubles, including 2-0 with De Meyer

The Shippensburg University women's tennis team completed three matches Tuesday in Florida, with the Raiders wrapping up a long day by defeating the Blue Devils of Wisconsin-Stout, 6-1.

The Raiders dropped a pair of 7-0 matches to start the day, falling to Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Illinois Wesleyan.

Shippensburg (4-5) competed on an unseasonably cold day in Florida, with temperatures in the 40s during its morning match against Wisconsin-Eau Claire and not getting above 60 on the day.

Shippensburg will have a day off Wednesday before returning to action at 10:30 a.m. Thursday against No. 44 Angelo State.

Match 1 vs. Wisconsin-Eau Claire
In the opener against the Blugolds (Wisconsin-Eau Claire), the Raiders nearly claimed the doubles point. The duo of Samhitha Koganti and Ava Kalist won at No. 2 doubles by a 6-2 score. Corinne Markovich and Jade Miller won four games at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play, Markovich won five games at No. 1 while Taylor Maguire won two games in each of her two sets at No. 5 singles.

Match 2 vs. Illinois Wesleyan
SU remained at the Sanlando Park complex and got right into a second match, facing the Titans (Illinois Wesleyan). The Raiders once again won a doubles match, as Kalist and Yasmin De Meyer won 7-5 at No. 3.

The match of the day came at No. 3 singles, where Brinley Orris endured a marathon and battled into a third-set tiebreaker. After dropping the opening set 5-7, Orris evened the match with a 7-6 (7-3) triumph in the second set. The match came down to the narrowest of margins, as Katie Van Heuklon took the third set 10-8.

Kalist also had a highly competitive match at No. 4 singles, winning seven total games including four in the second set. Maguire (No. 5) and Janelle Kingsboro (No. 6) each won two singles games in each of their two sets.

De Meyer and Rachel Gallagher served as the No. 1 and the No. 2 singles players and each won three games in their second set.

Match 3 vs. Wisconsin-Stout
Shippensburg then ventured down the road to the Fort Gatlin complex for a 4:30 p.m. clash with the Blue Devils (Wisconsin-Stout). In the third and final match of the day, SU finally nabbed the doubles point by winning two of the three flights.

Kalist and De Meyer made it 2-for-2 on the day at No. 2 doubles with a 6-1 win. Gallagher and Orris won 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to give the Raiders the early lead.

In singles, Orris endured another marathon. After a convincing 6-0 win in the first set, she went to the wire in the second set but dropped it in a tiebreaker – opponent Gretchen Murphy took the stanza by a 7-6 (7-4) margin. The third-set tiebreak was all Orris – who won 10-2 to emerge victorious.

Miller posted an impressive win at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. De Meyer won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2.

Maguire was slotted in at No. 6 and emerged victorious, 6-2, 6-1. Gallagher also nabbed a singles win at No. 4 with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph.
