The Shippensburg University lacrosse team passed its first road test of the season by holding off nonconference foe Georgian court in a close, low-scoring battle Saturday at the GCU Track & Field Complex, 9-6.
Shippensburg (2-0) senior
Grace DeMarzio stood tall in the defensive fracas, posting new career highs with nine groundballs and six caused turnovers – the most by a Raider player in both categories in eight years (Allison Fugate had 10 groundballs on Apr. 21, 2018; Valerie Hertz had six caused turnovers on Apr. 7, 2018) – to go along with her third career goal.
Georgian Court (0-2), despite playing from behind for much of the game, never trailed by more than four goals. The Lions got to within two of the Raiders twice, including a goal from Nena Menard to cut the margin to 8-6 with 3:33 remaining in regulation.
Brynn Hauck led the Raiders on the offensive end, scoring her fifth career hat trick.
Saturday's game also saw the first goal connection for sisters
Aubrey Bailey and
Alexa Bailey, with Alexa assisting on an Aubrey score to give SU a 2-1 lead early in the second quarter.
Aubrey finished with new career highs in total points with three (one goal and two assists) and groundballs (4). Alexa totaled a goal and an assist.
Sydney Fowler,
Ali Pioli and
Shannon Wood rounded out the Raider goal scorers.
Shawn Coombs chipped in a career-high four caused turnovers defensively.
Leah Cramer made three saves in the Raider net.
Shippensburg returns home next Saturday to welcome Jefferson for a noon start at Robb Sports Complex.
