SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team could not find its footing Saturday, as it returned to action with a 53-50 setback to Mansfield in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (3-23, 2-17 PSAC) honored its lone senior,
Makayla Foddrell, in a pregame ceremony. Foddrell, playing in her 112th game as a Raider, posted her second straight double-double (and second of her career) by scoring 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and equaling a career high with 13 rebounds.
Mansfield (4-23, 2-18) led by as many as 10 points in the first half despite shooting just 26 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Mountaineers forced 11 first-half turnovers while committing only four of their own.
SU closed the second quarter on a 9-0 run to trail by just one point at halftime, 25-24. The run proved to be 13 points in total, as the Raiders hit a pair of free throws and a layup to start the third quarter and led by three. Mansfield out-scored Shippensburg 16-8 over the final five minutes of the frame to lead 43-38 entering the fourth quarter.
The Raiders trailed 46-40 with less than six minutes but responded with a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead, 47-46, with 3:56 left. Back-to-back jumpers by Jenna Burkett (who scored a team-high 12 points for Mansfield) put the visitors up three, but SU tied it with 40 seconds to go after a
Kiara Hardy layup and a 1-for-2 effort at the free-throw line by
Michelle Olak.
After a timeout, Katie Sheeler – the top scoring threat for the Mountaineers – drove for a layup to give the visitors the lead for good. She later made 1-of-2 at the free-throw line. The Raiders could not convert on either of their final two possessions.
Sheeler was stymied offensively by the Raiders, finishing 2-of-17 from the field with just nine points. However, Sheeler led all players with seven assists and five steals while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and drawing nine fouls.
Mountaineer KJ Gordon scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting; she was an efficient 3-of-4 from three-point range. All other players spanning the two teams combined to go 2-for-28 (7.1 percent) from three-point range, as the Raiders were 0-for-14 from long range and Sheeler was 1-for-10 from behind the arc.
SU was 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) at the free-throw line but just 16-of-51 (31.4 percent) from the field. Olak led all players with 14 points for her 18th game in double figures this season.
Abbie Johns scored nine points, while
Melana Eyer had eight points, eight rebounds and two steals. The two players combined to go 11-for-11 at the free-throw line.
Shippensburg concludes its home schedule at 6 p.m. Wednesday vs. Shepherd at Heiges Field House.
