SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Augusta DeVos crushed a career-high 17 kills and junior Jaiden Anderson matched her career high with 45 assists as the Shippensburg University volleyball team hit .361 from the floor over the final two sets of a 3-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division victory over Millersville at Heiges Field House. Set scores were 25-22, 24-26, 25-15 and 25-19.

Shippensburg (14-8, 5-4) received 40 of its 60 kills in the match from "underclassmen" – players whose eligibility is either at sophomore or freshman status. On a night in which three regulars were sidelined due to injury, the performances were pivotal to a victory that allowed the Raiders to keep pace in the highly competitive Eastern Division standings.

DeVos, who entered the night with only 27 kills this season and just 29 in her career, destroyed her previous single-match bests with blistering efficiency. Her 17 kills came on just 27 swings and included just two errors; she hit an incredible .556 from the floor.

DeVos's 17 kills equal the most by a Raider in a match this season; junior Clara Wildermuth had 17 last weekend in the five-set win at Bloomsburg. Wildermuth finished with nine kills Friday.

Freshman Alia Schmidt, who entered the match with just 22 career kills to her credit, ripped a career-high 10 – hitting .240 from the floor over 25 swings.

Redshirt-sophomore Riley Blank entered in relief in the second set and totaled seven kills without an error, hitting .318.

Sophomore Mya Davis contributed six kills without an error on just 13 swings, making for a hitting percentage of .462.

In addition to her 45 assists, Anderson recorded 18 digs, tallied a career-high three block assists, and served one of SU's four aces on the night. Freshman Alycia Miller had two aces.

Senior libero Shay Kolivoski was absolutely fantastic. Kolivoski totaled 29 digs and her passing resulted in nine assists. Her eventful evening also included an ace and the sixth kill of her career.

Millersville (5-14, 0-8) was persistent throughout the match and hung tight with the assistance of six service aces and a 9-3 advantage in blocks. The first set featured 14 ties and six lead changes and had the Marauders holding a 22-21 lead until back-to-back blocks (the first by Anderson and senior Natalya Montague, the second by Anderson and DeVos) forced a timeout. Kolivoski followed with her ace and Wildermuth slammed a kill to put SU up 1-0.

The Raiders appeared to be on their way to a 2-0 advantage until some sideline spice and a Marauder rally ended up evening the match.

Trailing 22-14 after an attack error by setter Addison Reustle, a disagreement resulted in a yellow card being issued to MU assistant coach Zach Smith for leaving the bench and questioning the referee.

An extended on-court conversation of more than three minutes ensued. The dialogue began with captain Alex Nava speaking with the referee, followed by Nava reporting back to head coach Brian Smith. After that exchange, Nava returned to the referee for another chat. The stoppage lasted longer than the elapsed time of both Millersville timeouts that had been called earlier in the set.

Once action resumed, the Marauders got a bit of a jolt and halved their deficit yet still faced four set points down 24-20. It appeared that SU had won the set after a mishit by Montague ended up landing in-bounds on the Millersville side of the court, but the attempt was deemed a push by the referee and that gave the visitors new life.

Reustle then stepped to the service line and directed a five-point service run that included a Nava kill, a Marissa Storti kill and two blocks that ended the set 26-24 in MU's favor.

From there, an extra-motivated squad of Raiders delivered two of their most efficient sets of the season offensively. After shaking off an early 3-0 deficit in the third set, SU had 19 kills on just one attack error in the frame, hitting .439 from the floor. DeVos and Blank combined for 11 of those kills, while 14 of Anderson's 32 sets were terminated into points.

In the fourth set, 14 of SU's 16 kills came from freshmen or sophomores. DeVos had five kills on six swings, while Davis had four kills on 10 swings, and neither committed an attack error. Schmidt and Blank combined for five kills, as the Raiders swung .286 while holding Millerville to a .079 efficiency.

Nava recorded her fourth double-double of the season for the Marauders, equaling DeVos with a match-high 17 kills while recording 16 digs. She managed to hit .164 from the floor despite a whopping 61 swings and handled all 30 of her service receptions without an error. Sidonia Cecco led all players with 31 digs.

Shippensburg is now off for a week; it returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday when it hosts Lackawanna at Heiges Field House.
