SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team could not overcome a decisive second quarter by East Stroudsburg on Saturday as the Raiders fell by a score of 47-7 to the Warriors in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup on a brisk Homecoming afternoon at Seth Grove Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (2-5, 1-3) and East Stroudsburg (6-1, 3-0) were scoreless through 15 minutes and the Raiders were in position for the game's first score early in the second quarter, but a forced fumble at the ESU 1-yard line by Armonie Torres resulted in a touchback that buoyed the visitors and began a sea change.
Â
SU had gathered some early momentum with a fourth-down sack-fumble by
Alex Sauve that was recovered by
Luke Hines. It set up a 12-play, 74-yard series that was thwarted by Torres' defensive effort on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line.
Â
Matt Machalik then replaced Harrison Susi at quarterback for East Stroudsburg's third possession. He proceeded to go 12-of-13 for 214 yards and three touchdowns in the second quarter – directing his team on four scoring drives that created an insurmountable 28-0 halftime advantage.
Â
The Raiders were limited to just 31 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Quarterback
Roman Jensen was the team's leader with just 10 yards. Jensen was 12-of-27 through the air for 146 yards.
Â
Derek Guzman had team highs of four receptions and 64 receiving yards and caught a fourth-quarter touchdown from Jensen.
Â
Andrew Biddle delivered a career-high 10 tackles to lead the team; his five solo stops are also a new single-game best. He added his first career tackle-for-loss (TFL) and had a pass breakup.
Kal-El Durham had a career-high nine tackles;
Nate Myers also made nine stops.
Â
Sauve finished with eight tackles, including 1.5 TFLs.
Dariuz Lightner earned increased time at linebacker and finished with eight tackles; five more than his previous career total entering Saturday.
Alex Erby had four tackles and picked up another sack.
Â
Shippensburg is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it heads to Scranton to face Lackawanna.
