SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer's strong overall defensive effort was undone by a pair of goals in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division loss to No. 9 Kutztown Saturday evening at David See Field, 2-0.
Shippensburg (3-8-2,1-8-1 PSAC) held Kutztown's (10-1-2, 8-1-1) potent attack in check for the most part thanks to nine saves from Raider goalkeeper
Kirstin Brown, including several diving highlight reel stops to keep the score within reach.
Kutztown's Carly Louey wriggled free of the Raider defense for her eighth goal of the season in the 11th minute, using her pace to run onto a longball over the top by defender Alexis Varela.
The Golden Bears did not score again until the 71st minute, when a rare defensive lapse allowed KU's Giavanna Marciano too much space in the attacking third, giving her enough time to pick out a corner and beat Brown to double the margin.
Brown and the SU backline faced a total of 25 shots and 12 Kutztown corner kicks. The visitors maintained an 11-to-3 advantage in shots on target.
The SU keeper has a history of great outings against the Golden Bears, averaging nearly 10 saves per contest (59 total saves in six contests). Her most memorable moment against KU came last season, when she delivered nine stops in a 1-0 upset of the Golden Bears at David See Field.
Freshman defender
Katie Proctor was dangerous on the left-hand side while making her first collegiate start.
Paige Marek,
Kamryn Runkle and
Cailin Spelman registered shots on goal for Shippensburg.
The Raiders return to action next Saturday at East Stroudsburg. Kickoff from ESU's Eiler-Martin Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
