RECAP: Women’s Basketball tops Mansfield for first league win, 83-73

Raiders set new season-best in points scored (83), put four players in double figures

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team notched its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win of the season with a triumph at Eastern Division foe Mansfield Saturday at Decker Gymnasium, 83-73.

Shippensburg (2-16, 1-10 PSAC) enjoyed its best offensive performance of the season, setting a new high-water mark in points scored (83), made three-pointers (nine), and three-point field goal percentage (52.9). Additionally, SU tied a season-low in turnovers (14) and committed just five miscues in the second half.

The Raiders shot 52.9 percent from the field (27-of-51) over the course of the game and four Raiders reached double figures in scoring. Michelle Olak registered her fifth straight double-digit scoring performance, netting 23 points and seven boards (both team highs). She made a career-high eight free throws, converting at an 89 percent clip (8-of-9).

Kiara Hardy poured in a career-best 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting (87.5 percent) from the field. She also contributed a team-high four assists and four rebounds.

Abbie Johns and Melana Eyer played all 40 minutes for the Raiders Saturday. Johns produced 14 points, while Eyer added 12 points and four assists.

Mansfield (2-17, 0-12) matched SU from beyond the arc, making 10 of their 23 three-point attempts (43.5 percent). They were led by guard Katie Sheeler, who converted five-of-eight from three (62.5 percent) for a game-high 28 points.

Shippensburg made six of its first eight attempts from three to start the contest, including two apiece from Johns and Lauren Marton, but the Mounties' hot shooting resulted in a 17-17 stalemate after one quarter and a slim 36-33 lead for the Raiders at the half.

SU scored the first six points coming out of halftime to extend the advantage to nine. After a Mountie run trimmed the margin down to just three early in the fourth quarter, 61-58, the Raiders responded with six-straight once again to put the game away.

Shippensburg outscored Mansfield 34-to-18 in the paint and 12-to-7 in second chance points. SU also dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Mounties 32-to-24.

Marton finished with eight points and Mackenzie Stoner matched her career high with five points off the SU bench.

The Raiders pulled out the victory despite having three players foul out and a fourth saddled with four fouls for much of the fourth quarter.

Shippensburg is scheduled to travel to Shepherd on Tuesday night for a 5:30 p.m. game at the Butcher Center, weather permitting.
