RECAP: Volleyball takes down Slippery Rock in thrilling five-setter

Kolivoski records 1000th dig in five set win over Slippery Rock

The Shippensburg University volleyball team put up a thrilling five-set win against Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest at Morrow Field House. Set scores were 25-22, 9-25, 25-13, 18-25, 18-16.
 
Shippensburg (7-6) recorded 53 kills on the day and a .124 hitting percentage, while Slippery Rock (7-7) totaled 55 kills with a .169 hitting percentage. Both teams recorded six aces. The Raiders were out-blocked by The Rock, 13-10.
 
SU had to stave off six total match points in the fifth and final set. It trailed 14-10 but scored four straight to stay alive. The Raiders then fended off two more at 15-14 and 16-15 and secured their only lead of the final set when they won the match at 18-16. 
 
Isabelle Bombas led the Raider offense with 13 kills, hitting .480 from the floor. She only committed one error on 25 swings. Bombas added a solo block and four block assists. Clara Wildermuth and Elise Bragg each contributed ten kills. Bragg added a career-high 18 digs and added an ace.
 
Kearstin Davis dished out 32 assists and 14 digs. Jaiden Anderson added 14 assists, five digs and a kill. Shay Kolivoski led the defense with 25 digs, recording her 1000th career dig in the match. Berkley Simmons tallied a match-high three aces.
 
Neither team led by more than two in the first set until, with the score at 10-8 in favor of The Rock, the Raiders went on a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead, 13-10. A kill from Bombas and a Rock attack error increased the SU lead, 17-12. The Rock answered with a 4-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to one, 18-17. SU notched a 3-0 run to increase the lead, 21-17. The Rock completed a 4-1 scoring stretch to put them within one, 23-22. A kill from Montague and an ace from Bragg gave the Raiders set one, 25-22.
 
Slippery Rock opened the second set with an 8-1 scoring stretch. The deficit was too large for the Raiders, and the Rock closed the set with a 3-0 run, 25-9. 
 
SU flipped the momentum and opened the third set with a 7-0 run. The Rock came within three after a 5-0 run, 12-9. Kills from Wildermuth and Bombas increased the Raider lead to five, 15-10. SU recorded a 7-0 run that featured two blocks from Bombas, 22-11. A kill from Bragg gave SU the third set, 25-13.
 
The fourth set started as a back and forth with the teams exchanging leads. The Rock saw their first lead of more than two points after completing a 5-0 run, 15-12. A kill from Bragg stopped the run but the Rock answered with a 2-0 run, 17-13. The Rock closed the fourth set with a 3-0 run to even the match and force a fifth set.
 
Slippery Rock opened the fifth set with a 7-0 run. A kill from Bombas, an ace from Shea Stevens and two Rock errors cut the SU deficit to three, 7-4. Two Rock errors put the Raiders within two, 8-6. Slippery Rock responded with a 2-0 run to increase the lead to four, 10-6. Natalya Montague delivered a kill that sparked a 3-0 run for the Raiders and put them within one, 10-9. The Rock answered with a 4-1 scoring stretch to put them at match point, 14-10.
 
The Raiders held the Rock on four match points and completed a run that included a pair of kills from Gracen Nutt to tie the set. The Rock got another match point but a block by Davis tied the set. Slippery Rock saw its third match point, but Nutt notched a kill to keep SU in the match. SU saw its first match point after a Rock attack error. Wildermuth closed the match in favor of the Raiders with a block, 18-16.
 
Shippensburg will return to action on Tuesday where it will travel and take on PSAC Eastern Division opponent Shepherd at 6 p,m.
