SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team began its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule with a 3-0 victory over No. 9 IUP on a cloudy Saturday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (8-0, 1-0 PSAC) dominated the Crimson Hawks (3-3, 0-1) beyond the 3-0 scoreline. The Raiders registered a 23-to-8 advantage in shots, including a 13-to-2 margin in shots on goal. SU also earned 13 penalty corners.
Â
The Raiders two first-half tallies were both the result of a well-worked penalty corner. Tic-tac-toe passing led to a wide-open point shot from Kelly Naudé that was redirected in front of the cage by teammate
Lilly Cantabene for the opening tally just six minutes in.
Â
SU added to its lead with less than a minute to go in the opening period, with
Agus Garibaldi laying off a pass to Naudé in the circle, who blasted a shot past the IUP goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
Garibaldi's helper marked the 30th assist of her standout career, making her just the fifth Raider to reach that milestone. It is the second recent career achievement for the SU senior, who also reached the 50 career-goal plateau with a tally back on Sept. 17.
Â
IUP goalie Celeste Pagliaroli kept the margin at two goals until a great individual effort from Cantabene with 2:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Ship attacker dribbled the ball between the legs of her marker on a foray into the circle, then proceeded to dribble around the onrushing Pagliaroli before finding the back of the cage from a tight angle for her second goal of the match and sixth overall this season.
Â
Pagliaroli finished the contest with 10 saves.
Â
The Raiders continue their conference slate by travelling to new PSAC field hockey member Frostburg State Wednesday at 4 p.m.
