The Shippensburg University field hockey team overcame just its second deficit of the season Wednesday by rallying for a 4-1 victory at Frostburg State in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (9-0, 2-0 PSAC East) conceded a goal to Frostburg State (2-8, 0-2) at the 8:48 mark of the first quarter on a failed restart, as a pass went awry in front of the Raider cage and two Bobcat forwards capitalized to slam home the opening goal.
Â
One minute later, SU earned a penalty corner and immediately evened the score, as
Savannah Silvestre received the entry from
Emily Bitters and fired a shot from the top of the circle that ramped off a defender's stick and flew into the top of the net.
Â
With less than 30 seconds left in the first quarter,
Agus Garibaldi recorded a field hockey "golazo" to give the Raiders a lead they would not relinquish.
Â
Garibaldi grabbed possession of the ball on the FSU end-line and finessed the ball onto her stick to administer a series of aerial dribbles, of which the final bounce she volleyed high over the goalkeeper's blocker and into the net. It was her third tally of the season.
Â
Less than a minute into the second quarter,
Lilly Cantabene made her bid for the highlight reels with her team-leading seventh goal of the season. After gaining a slight bit of space in the right side of the circle, she fired a reverse hit that flew high into the top of the cage to put SU up 3-1.
Â
Anne Gardner scored the fourth Raider goal about six minutes into the third quarter by swatting a rebound out of mid air and into the cage. Cantabene's initial shot was stopped by goalkeeper Zoe Barnes, but the carom off her blocker resulted in Gardner's aerial finish.
Â
The Raiders posted a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 14-4 edge in penalty corners.
Emma Albee made three saves in the victory. Barnes made 12 for the Bobcats.
Â
Shippensburg returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts No. 5 West Chester at Robb Sports Complex. It will be the official "conference game" between the two teams; SU's 3-2 double-overtime win at then-No. 7 West Chester on Sept. 9 was a non-conference contest.
