SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit by putting four past No. 18 Seton Hill in an exciting 4-2 victory Saturday at a rainy, overcast David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-2-1) sophomore forward
Anthony Weekley fueled the Raider comeback with his first collegiate hat trick. Defender
Nate Herb also found his way onto the scoresheet for SU.
Seton Hill (4-3) registered a goal in the third minute via forward James Aubrey and in the 86th minute via a Julian Marker penalty kick. The four goals allowed by the Griffin defense marked a new season high.
Weekley provided the perfect answer to the visitors' early tally, opening his account just five minutes later by pouncing on a blocked pass attempt on the edge of the 18, beating his mark and slotting a well-placed shot past the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
He put the hosts ahead with his second tally in the 17th minute. Sophomore defender
Tanner Horvath's exquisite long ball forward put the SU attacked in on goal, which resulted in another calm, cool and collected finish.
Herb added to the Raider advantage with a headed goal off a
Ethan Omondi corner kick eight minutes after halftime.
Seton Hill made things nervy for Shippensburg late thanks to Marker's goal from the penalty spot in the 86th minute.
The Griffins' push for an equalizer made them vulnerable on the counterattack, and the combination of Weekley and
Nat Thompson made them pay.
Thompson, a reserve winger, used his skill and fresh legs to beat three Seton Hill defenders on the left wing. His cross found Weekley in the box to finish off the hattrick and the SU victory.
SU goalkeeper
Jack McCann made a tremendous diving one-handed stop to deny Aubrey and preserve the lead prior to Weekley's final goal. McCann was credited with five total saves.
Seton Hill's pressure resulted in a 20-to-11 shots advantage for the visitors, and a 13-to-3 margin in corner kicks.
Up next, the Raiders open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play with a road matchup Wednesday at Shepherd. Kick-off from Shepherdstown is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
