SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 4-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team scored a goal on a first-quarter penalty corner and rode that tally to a shutout victory in its home opener, defeating No. 5 Assumption by a 1-0 score on a sunny and warm early Friday evening at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (3-0) capitalized on its only first-quarter shot on goal and penalty corner at the 8:40 mark when
Anne Gardner laid her stick low to tip-in a
Lilly Cantabene shot. The goal proved to be the only tally of the match.

Assumption (0-3) matched SU with six shots on goal. Shippensburg managed four penalty corners in the second half and did not allow one over the final 30 minutes. The Greyhounds, however, doubled up the Raiders in second-half shots on goal (4-2).

Emma Albee was staunch in front of the cage, making six saves (four in the second half). It is her second shutout of the season and the 17th of her career.

Shippensburg will face No. 2 Saint Anselm at noon Sunday; the match will take place at Widener College.
