SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University Athletics has hired
Katie Lammando as a full-time assistant field hockey coach.
Â
Lammando has been elevated to the role of full-time assistant after serving as the team's part-time assistant coach the past two seasons.
Â
"I am looking forward to working with
Katie Lammando as our full-time assistant coach," head coach Rayell Wallace said. "Katie's passion for this program and her commitment to Shippensburg University is impressive. The additional responsibilities she took on during our coaching transition were admirable – it speaks to her dedication to the team and her willingness to grow as a coach and mentor. We are very fortunate to have her with us in our day-to-day pursuit of our goals."
Â
Lammando has already experienced her share of success as a member of the Shippensburg coaching staff. Last season she helped guide SU to a No. 1 national ranking and its third-ever Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title. She was a key part of a Raider coaching staff that was named the 2024 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
Â
"I am extremely honored to continue to serve the Ship Field Hockey program as the full-time assistant coach," Lammando said. "I would like to especially thank Coach Wallace and the athletic administration – Jeff Michaels, Carrie Michaels and Ashley Grimm – for granting me the opportunity to continue to work with the dedicated student-athletes and university staff. The Shippensburg University Community is so unique, and working here is truly a blessing."
Â
Lammando has worked primarily with the Raider goalkeepers during her tenure, in addition to other duties such as video analysis and recruiting.
Â
Her first season at SU saw the emergence of
Emma Albee in goal (NCAA Division II-leading .821 save percentage in '23, PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year in '24), and resulted in trips to the PSAC Championship game and the NCAA Division II Semifinals.
Â
"As I step into this new role with Rayell, our goals remain the same," Lammando stated. "We are looking to continue to strengthen the Ship Field Hockey legacy, provide holistic development for the current and prospective student-athletes, and compete for championships along the way."
Â
A native of Hershey, Lammando remains in the region in which she played for Lower Dauphin High School under legendary coach Linda Kreiser.
Â
"Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, Shippensburg Field Hockey has continually been a strong program not only in the PSAC, but nationally. The program is rich in history and is strongly connected to its core values, which has shown through the programs continuous athletic and academic successes," Lammando said. "Our vast alumni network and fantastic student-athletes are living proof of the hard work, dedication, and strength in a common goal of competing for championships."
Â
Lammando previously served as a graduate assistant at Mercyhurst for two seasons (2021-22).
Â
Before joining the coaching ranks, Lammando was a goalkeeper for Stonehill College. With the Skyhawks, she served as team captain for two and a half seasons. She earned NE10 Goalkeeper of the Week three times and was a Second Team All-Conference selection. She was the recipient of the Presidential Merit Scholarship, a two-time member of NE10 Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and the 2018 Athletics Community Service Award-winner.
Â
Lammando received her undergraduate degree from Stonehill in 2021 and earned a Master of Science degree in organizational leadership from Mercyhurst in May of 2023.
Â
She is currently enrolled at Shippensburg in the master's program for mental health counseling and is completing coursework toward becoming a Licensed Mental Health Professional.
Â
Lammando replaces Ally Mooney '18, who resigned in April to take a position at Delaware.
