SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sasha Lee won the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump on Wednesday, delivering the second-best mark in school history in the latter, to highlight seven event victories for the Shippensburg University women's outdoor track & field team in action at the Mid-Week PR Bonanza held at Seth Grove Stadium.
Lee landed a huge personal best of 20 feet, 2 ¼ inches (6.15 meters) on her sixth and final attempt to move into second place in school history for the long jump and now trails only her coach,
Sarah Hewitt. Her PR currently ranks ninth on the NCAA Division II qualifying list; the 3.6 wind reading associated with the jump is just under the 4.0 threshold for consideration.
It capped a strong jumps sequence in which she also landed a six-meter jump on her fifth attempt – marking the first two such leaps of her career. The achievement moved her up five spots in the SU record book and makes her the fourth 20-foot long jumper in school history (Hewitt 20-9.75 [6.34m], Zarria Williams 20-1 [6.12m],
Sara McKean 20-0.5 [6.11m]).
On the track, Lee won the 100-meter hurdles by crossing the finish line in 14.27 seconds.
Riyah Whigham was the top finisher in the triple jump with a season best of 38 feet, 5 inches (11.71 meters) that ranks third on the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leaderboard behind Lee and fellow first-year competitor Shannon Harnett of East Stroudsburg. It improved her No. 7 all-time ranking at SU by one inch.
Ashley Laukus won the high jump and paced five Raiders in the event with a clearance of 5 feet, 5 inches (1.65 meters) that matches her personal best. It puts her into a five-way tie for third place on the league leaderboard.
Likewise,
Carissa Bender matched her personal best in the pole vault, placing third on a top clearance of 11 feet, 7 ¾ inches (3.55 meters).
Among the highlights in throwing events were new PRs in the discus for
Makayla Decker and
ShanAnn Simmons that rank them fourth and sixth in the league respectively. Decker placed third on a new top throw of 142 feet, 4 inches (43.38 meters), while Simmons was fourth with a PR of 132 feet, 5 inches (40.37 meters).
Decker remains ninth all-time at SU in the discus with her improved personal best.
Ella Hartel, the reigning PSAC Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year, made her Raider track & field debut Wednesday and delivered a conference qualifier in the 1,500 meters, winning the event in 4:54.07.
Other event victories included
Emily Calamia in the 200 meters (25.89 seconds) and the Raider 4x400-meter relay.
Shippensburg returns to action in nine days when it hosts the Paul Kaiser Classic, which is now a two-day meet that begins Friday, April 25 with the hammer throw and the 10K.
