GAME ONE: SHIP 6, MILLERSVILLE 1
Â
Millersville (19-9, 3-5 PSAC East) opened Game 1 with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. A throwing error during a base-stealing attempt allowed Jocelyn Langer to run home for a 1-0 Marauder lead.
Â
Shippensburg responded by scoring three runs of its own in the bottom of the first. A leadoff single from Lafferty was followed by a stolen base. A groundout from sophomore
Reagan Bauman advanced Lafferty to third, where a sacrifice fly play by junior
Caitlyn Martell brought Lafferty home to tie the game.
Â
With two outs and nobody on, Wilmot singled into right field. Junior
Rilee Ehrlacher then sent a hit into center field that got past a diving outfielder and went for a triple to make it 2-1. Briddell then singled through the left side to advance Erlacher home for a 3-1 lead.
Â
Over the next three and a half innings, Ball worked out of a couple of jams as the Marauders had four hits but left five on base. SU extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth when Bauman sent a 2-2 pitch well past the scoreboard over the left-field fence for a two run home run shot, her first of the season and second of her career, to put the Raiders up 5-1.
Â
Another run in the bottom of the sixth gave Shippensburg its final 6-1 margin. Â
Â
Ball pitched a complete game for the Raiders, striking out seven batters. She scattered five hits and two walks.
Â
GAME TWO: SHIP 4, MILLERSVILLE 0
Â
The first run scored in Game 2 came in the bottom of the second inning, which started with a leadoff double from Sabocsik. Wilmot hit a single up the middle that gave Sabocsik enough time to race home for the opening score, 1-0.
Â
Shippensburg added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, starting the inning with a leadoff single from Sabocsik. Wilmot reached on a fielder's choice as Sabocsik beat the throw to second base, before a 5-3 double play gave the Raiders two outs. A single up the middle from Briddell brought home sophomore pinch runner
Ryan Morse for a 3-0 lead.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth inning, consecutive two-out triples from Sullivan and Lafferty gave the Raiders a 4-0 cushion.
Â
Hayward pitched the first complete game of her career, striking out nine batters in seven innings. Hayward only allowed five hits and one walk en route to her first career shutout. She has struck out 21 batters over her last 13.2 innings pitched.
