RECAP: Softball sweeps doubleheader against No. 25 West Chester, 4-0 and 5-4

Raiders hit four home runs on the day

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Shippensburg University softball team picked up a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader sweep over No. 25 West Chester on Saturday afternoon, winning Game 1, 4-0, and Game 2, 5-4 in eight innings, on a sunny, windy afternoon at Robb Field.

Shippensburg (16-10, 5-5 PSAC East) combined for 17 hits on the day and used solid pitching and clutch hitting to extend its winning streak to four games. West Chester (19-8, 5-5) mounted a late comeback in Game 2, but a walk-off hit in extras from the Raiders secured the sweep.

Three Raiders led the team in hits. Junior Caitlyn Martell, sophomore Emily Lafferty and sophomore Sarah Sabocsik all tallied three hits on the day. Martell and Lafferty each scored twice.

Sabocsik finished with four RBIs and a run scored, including a home run – one of four total for the Raiders during the twinbill. The North Penn High School trifecta of Sabocsik, sophomore Brie Wilmot, and freshman Gianna Cimino each hit a home run, while senior Aryanna Briddell went deep early in Game 1.

It is the first time SU totaled four home runs in a day since May 1, 2024, where Ship launched five total against Gannon and Kutztown.

The Raiders head to Mansfield for a PSAC East Doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

GAME ONE: SHIP 4, WEST CHESTER 0

Shippensburg opened the scoring in Game 1 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. In a one-out situation, Briddell hit the ball over the fence in left field for a solo home run, her sixth of the season, to give the Raiders the early 1-0 lead.

Consecutive singles by Lafferty and Martell prefaced a two-run double by Sabocsik to make it 3-0.

Wilmot sent the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning over the fence in left field for her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to give Shippensburg the final score of 4-0.

Senior Alicia Ball pitched a complete game, eclipsing double digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season with ten. Ball took a no hitter into the sixth, scattering three walks and just one single for her first seven-inning shutout of the season.

GAME TWO: SHIP 5, WEST CHESTER 4 (8 INNINGS)

Shippensburg opened the scoring in Game 2 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lafferty started with a leadoff triple to left and was followed by an RBI triple from Martell to bring Lafferty home for the 1-0 lead. Sabocsik then hit the first pitch of her at bat out to center field for a two-run homer – her second home run of the season – to put the Raiders up 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Cimino launched the second pitch of her at bat past the scoreboard in left field for a solo home run, the first of her career, giving Shippensburg a 4-0 lead.

West Chester rallied in top of the sixth to score four runs. The Golden Rams used a two RBI double, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single to tie the game, ultimately forcing extras.

The bottom of the eighth inning opened with a leadoff single from Sabocsik. An error and a fielder's choice put Wilmot on second base

Another fielder's choice erased Sabocsik and advanced Wilmot to second base, giving way to junior Rilee Ehrlacher. Erlacher provided a walk-off winner, lacing a double off the glove of the left fielder that gave Wilmot the time to race home to give the Raiders a 5-4 Game 2 victory.

Freshman Dani Hayward started in the circle for the Raiders, pitching five innings, striking out two batters while scattering five hits and two runs. Sophomore Madalyn Dyer pitched the final three frames, striking out two and only allowing one hit. She was credited with the win, improving her season record to 5-0.
