SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team battled Lock Haven down to the wire in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division loss on Alumni and Pink Out Day Saturday at Heiges Field, 65-57.
Shippensburg (8-13, 5-10 PSAC East) was within one possession of PSAC East-leading Lock Haven (14-7, 9-6) inside the final minute of a contest that featured eight total ties and 11 lead changes. The led for a total of 17-minutes and 5-seconds despite having just seven healthy bodies.
Freshman
Michelle Olak had her best game in a Raider uniform, posting her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds (both career-highs). Olak converted 7-of-11 from the floor (64-percent) and aided a 42-to-26 SU advantage in points in the paint. Nine of her rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Lock Haven held off a strong Raider effort thanks to an edge in points off turnovers (18-to-4) and its accuracy from the foul line (20-for-21, 95.2 percent). The Bald Eagles were also able to quiet the SU momentum in key moments, including at the second and third quarter buzzer.
Senior
Taja Colbert, still affected by a recent illness, gave Shippensburg a 15-13 edge with a lay-up in the final seconds of the opening stanza.
Shippensburg held its largest lead, 29-25, following an Olak layup with 2:08 left in the second, but back-to-back Bald Eagle three-pointers, including an Olivia Smith trey that beat the first half buzzer, sent the visitors into the locker room with a two-point lead, 31-29.
Freshman
Abbie Johns splashed a timely triple to wrestle back the lead, 45-43, with 0:41 left in the third quarter. Lock Haven then knocked down two free throws with 0.3 seconds left in the frame to regain the advantage entering the final ten minutes, 47-45.
Shippensburg led by two twice early in the fourth, and a basket from senior
Abbie Miller evened the score at 51-51 with 6:19 left.
The veteran Bald Eagles answered with a 6-0 spurt that turned out to be the difference.
Colbert finished with 12 points and three assists. Junior forward
Makayla Foddrell contributed eight points and four boards.
Graduate
Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez provided a spark off the SU bench, registering seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, three rebounds and a blocked shot. She led the Raiders in +/- with a +8 during her 15-minutes on the court.
Shippensburg returns to action against West Chester Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Heiges Field House.
