SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team was defeated Wednesday night by West Chester, 58-38, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup to Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (8-15, 5-12 PSAC) and West Chester (12-12, 9-8) were within one point at halftime; the Golden Rams held a 22-21 lead. The two teams combined for 22 turnovers and 39 missed field goals in the first half, and both teams shot an identical 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from the field in the opening quarter.
WCU outscored SU 20-4 in the third quarter to take control. The Golden Rams were 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) in the third quarter while holding the Raiders to 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) shooting. All 20 of West Chester's third-quarter points were scored in the paint. The visitors finished with 42 points in the paint and 22 points off turnovers.
Senior
Taja Colbert was the only Raider in double figures; she finished with 11 points, all of which came in the first half. Colbert added five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Freshman
McKenzie Thomas had the second highest scoring output of her career, totaling nine points on 4-of-8 from the field. Thomas made SU's only three-pointer and recorded career highs of five rebounds and two steals.
Senior
Abbie Miller and junior
Makayla Foddrell each scored six points. Miller added six rebounds. Graduate
Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez grabbed five rebounds.
Michelle Kozicki paced all players with 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. Kozicki was one rebound shy of a double-double, blocked three shots and had two steals. Forward Erin Daley did have a double-double, finishing with 11 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high five blocks.
Anna McTamney had 13 points, while Ava Mazur contributed six rebounds and eight assists off the bench.
Shippensburg will travel Saturday to face East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
