RECAP: Baseball walks off both games in thrilling doubleheader sweep of Gannon, 5-4 and 8-7

Kyle Ausgotharp, AJ Wenrich provide game winners

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team won both games of a nonconference doubleheader against Gannon in walk-off fashion on a frigid Saturday afternoon at Fairchild Field, 5-4 and 8-7.

Shippensburg (4-2) twice came from behind to beat Gannon (0-2), plating the tying and go-ahead runs in the last chance bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, and putting up a four-spot to tie it in the eighth inning of Game 2 before winning in extras.

Freshman Kyle Ausgotharp drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the opener, and junior AJ Wenrich delivered a clutch two-out RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning of the nightcap.

Wenrich led the Raiders with six hits in the doubleheader, including a five-hit performance in Game 2.

The Raiders conclude the weekend series with the Golden Knights with a nine-inning contest Sunday at Fairchild Field. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.

Game 1: Shippensburg 5, Gannon 4

The score was even through the first six frames of the seven-inning contest before both teams rallied during a thrilling final frame.

Gannon broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single from Frank Kula, but Kula was thrown out at second attempt to advance on a throw home. Freshman Thomas Davenport got the next two batters to limit the damage.

In the bottom half, Wenrich began the Raider rally with a one-out walk. Sophomore Ty Sherman followed with a single, and sophomore Mason Morris stroked a single to left to bring home the tying run.

Augustharp stepped in the box and made it three straight hits, lining an RBI single to center to give the Raiders a walk-off victory.

Davenport earned the win in relief, allowing an earned run and striking out two in two solid frames.

Senior Jaxon Dalena started and recorded five strikeouts in five innings. His control got away from him in the second, which led to all three of his earned runs.

Shippensburg scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Wenrich delivered a sacrifice fly in the first, SU plated an unearned run in the second and Ausgotharp collected the first of his two RBI singles in the third.

Ausgotharp (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Morris (2-for-3, RBI) each registered multi-hit games for the Raiders.

Game 2: Shippensburg 8, Gannon 7 (10 innings)

Shippensburg fell behind by four runs, 7-3, before rallying for five runs from the eighth inning on.

Senior Gio Calamia delivered the big blow during the Raider comeback, smashing a game-tying three-run triple to cap a four-run bottom of the eighth. It was his second triple of the game.

Junior Jack Robinson quieted the Golden Knight bats the rest of the way. The right-handed relief pitcher allowed just one hit and recorded three strikeouts in two innings of work to set the stage for Wenrich's clutch game-winner.

Wenrich totaled three RBI singles in Game 2. Thanks to his five-hit game, the third baseman raised his batting average from .267 at the start of the day to .435. It was SU's first five-hit game since Cash Gladfelter collected five hits on April 11, 2017.

Freshman Will Oates totaled three hits in the nightcap. The SU backstop singled and scored during SU's eighth inning rally and later started the 10th with a single and scored the game-winning run.

Calamia finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He is the Raider to have to triples in one game since teammate Bryce Herb vs. Manfield on May 5, 2023.

Senior Carter Hinds and junior Mike Heckman also singled and scored during the four-run eighth.

Junior starting pitcher J.T. Weaver was roughed up early before settling in. He finished with six earned runs and five strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Sophomore Bryce Amos tossed 1.2 scoreless in relief.
