SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team could not put away visiting Slippery Rock on Saturday, as the Raiders fell 76-70 to The Rock in a hard-fought Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover at Heiges Field House.
Neither Shippensburg (5-4, 0-2 PSAC) nor Slippery Rock (10-1, 3-0) led by more than six points in a game that featured 10 lead changes and 10 tie scores. The Raiders, who led for 27 minutes, took a five-point advantage into the final five minutes of the game.
The Rock, which made six of its final seven field-goal attempts in the contest, finished the game on a 7-0 run. It took the lead on an Elijah Hill hook with 48 seconds to go and then got a stop on the defensive end. After missing two free throws, Ike Herster grabbed the offensive rebound and then made two free throws of his own to ice it.
Michael Dickson led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 6-of-8 at the free-throw line but committed seven turnovers. It was his third 20-point game of the season and the fifth of his career.
Jaydon Smith finished with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Markus Frank scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and had six rebounds.
Timmy Conner was 4-of-5 from the field, totaling nine points.
Herster led The Rock with 14 points. He was one of five SRU players in double figures; Brady Mayo was 3-of-5 from three-point range and contributed 13 points off the bench.
Slippery Rock shot 44 percent (7-of-16) from three-point range; it was 50 percent (5-of-10) in the first half. The Raiders were just 21 percent (3-of-14) from behind the arc. SU was 15-of-20 (75 percent) at the free-throw line while SRU was just 13-of-23 (57 percent).
Before the game, a moment of silence was held in memory of assistant coach
Dave Miller. Saturday was the first home contest for the Raiders since his passing on December 10.
Shippensburg is right back in action at 3 p.m. tomorrow vs. Edinboro at Heiges Field House.
