SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team could not overcome a 10-point halftime deficit Sunday as it dropped a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover to Edinboro, 86-78, at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (5-5, 0-3 PSAC) opened on a 9-0 run, which prompted a quick Edinboro (5-5, 2-2) timeout just 2:11 into the game. The Fighting Scots responded with nine of the next 11 points and eventually evened the score, 18-18.
The score was tied 27-27 with 6:35 left in the half when Edinboro began to get hot from the field. It made six of its final nine field-goal attempts of the frame, including three three-pointers, to take a 45-35 lead into halftime.
The Raiders cut the deficit to five points early in the second half before the Fighting Scots responded and bumped their advantage to a game-high 15, 64-49, with 11:30 to go. SU only got as close as six points down the stretch.
Markus Frank led the Raiders with both 22 points and eight rebounds. It was his sixth 20-point game of the season and the 32nd of his career.
Jaydon Smith finished just three points short of his career high, scoring 20 on 8-of-13 shooting (2-of-4 from three-point range). Smith added five assists and a block and did not commit a turnover in 34 minutes of action. It was Smith's third 20-point game of the season and the fifth of his career.
Timmy Conner was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and finished with 12 points.
Sebastian Edwards added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and had two assists and two steals.
Ben Rill contributed eight points on 4-of-5 shooting while
Michael Dickson had a team-high six assists.
Edinboro got a game-high 23 points from Evan Berger, who played all 40 minutes. Berger scored 19 of his 23 points in the first half, as he was 7-of-11 from the field (including 3-of-7 from three-point range) in the opening 20 minutes. He finished one rebound short of a double-double and added three assists.
Mekhi Reynolds scored 18 points while center Amaan Sandhu contributed 16 points and eight rebounds.
Both teams shot an identical 32-of-60 (53.3 percent) from the field. The Fighting Scots made nine three-pointers and were 13-of-19 (68 percent) at the free-throw line, while the Raiders made five three-pointers and were 9-of-11 (82 percent) at the free-throw line.
Efficiency was also a common theme – SU had 19 assists compared to 10 turnovers, while Edinboro had 18 assists to just nine turnovers. The Fighting Scots committed just two turnovers in the first half and five of its nine overall came in the final five minutes.
Shippensburg now enters the NCAA-mandated break for the holiday and will return to practice on the week of December 29. Its next game is Friday, Jan. 2 at Gannon.
