The Shippensburg University women's basketball team scored a season-high 76 points in a high-scoring setback to Chestnut Hill Monday evening at Sorgenti Arena, 89-76.
Shippensburg (1-4) shot a season-best 53.6 percent from the field (30-of-56) and saw five players reach double figures in scoring, led by 21 points and career-high seven assists from point guard
Melana Eyer.
Chestnut Hill (3-3) was lights-out from distance, converting 47.8 percent of its three-point attempts (11-for-23). Tamia Washington (21 points, 4-of-6 from three) and Anahita Jackson (17 points, 3-of-8 on three-pointers) combined for seven made threes and 38 points off the Griffin bench.
The Raiders started off the contest on fire, leading by as many as eight points (17-9) before Jackson sank a half-court prayer at the first quarter buzzer to make it a one-possession game, 19-17.
Shippensburg proceeded to shoot a gaudy 66.7 percent from the field (18-of-28) in the second quarter, converting its first 8-of-10 from the field in the frame.
Despite the hot stretch, they were unable to distance themselves from the Griffins, who knocked down 9-of-14 second quarter threes (64.3 percent) and led 45-43 at the break.
After a
McKenzie Thomas lay-up tied the score at 45-all coming out of halftime, Chestnut Hill responded with eight straight points as part of a larger 15-4 run that gave the Griffins a double-digit cushion, 60-49.
The Raiders got back to within six points of the Griffins in the final quarter but the hosts were able to hold on via the charity stripe.
Chestnut Hill went to the foul line nearly 40 times in the contest, converting a 64.9 percent clip (24-of-37).
Shippensburg, meanwhile, went 12-of-22 from the stripe (54.5 percent).
The Raiders out-shot the Griffins from the field – 53.6 percent to 47.4 percent – and recorded a 46-to-39 advantage in points in the paint.
Freshman
Lauren Marton finished with a career-high 13 points during a 5-of-6 night from the field (83.3 percent). Thomas added 11 points, while
Michelle Olak, and
Abbie Johns scored 10 points apiece.
Jackson's and Washington's efforts helped the Griffins to a 51-21 advantage in bench points. Sara Tamoun poured in 20 points to pace the Chestnut Hill starters.
Next up, the Raiders will look to avenge a Nov. 24 loss at Bowie State when they welcome the Bulldogs to Heiges Field Friday at 7 p.m.
