ATLANTIC REGION CHAMPIONS: Shippensburg wins 2025 title by two points over No. 29 Charleston

Quinan, Crum, Wolfe and Devine earn All-Region honors as SU claims its fifth-ever regional title

The Shippensburg University men's cross country team went toe-to-toe with the best of the best in the Atlantic Region on Saturday and emerged on top of a 22-team field, claiming the 2025 championship Saturday afternoon at Lock Haven's West Branch Cross Country Course.

Shippensburg and No. 29 Charleston were separated by just two points atop the standings, with scant margins between each team's scorers in direct comparison. SU went 3-5-12-14-27 to score 60 points, while UC finished 7-9-10-15-21 to score 62 points.

It is the fifth Atlantic Region Championship in school history, accompanying titles in 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Head Coach Steve Spence's squad has now qualified for the national championships in each of the last three seasons.

There was a 38-point separation between the Golden Eagles and fellow Mountain East Conference (MEC) school Davis & Elkins in third place. Fayetteville State of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) finished in fourth place, just one point behind D&E for the final team qualification – with Brian Kiprop and Franklin Kipchirchir running 1-2 overall in the race.

Armed with an experienced lineup and running on the flat West Branch Course, the Raiders were adequately prepared for the challenge of facing the region's best while also upgrading its distance an additional two kilometers in its longest race of the season.

Shippensburg grabbed the team lead around the first mile marker and maintained it through the duration, but it seemed strongest in the first third of the race. The Raider pack was tight at the front and held its largest lead around the two-mile mark, which is around the time Charleston began to pick up the pace.

The Golden Eagles had gone from 28 points behind the Raiders at the three-mile mark to within five points of the Raiders at the four-mile mark per the split scores. Around the same time, the back of Fayetteville State's scoring pack began to fall back, moving the Broncos from second place into a battle for third with the Senators.

SU and UC ran neck and neck over the exciting close, meaning each and every scorer was vital to the finish.

Senior Garrett Quinan led a group of four Raiders who earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region honors by placing third in 30:21.90. Quinan was the top American in Saturday's race and achieved his fourth career All-Region classification – including his third straight Top 5 finish at the regional championships.

Quinan beat IUP's Mike Formica – the 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champion – by about three seconds, as the Crimson Hawk stalwart earned the third and final individual qualification for nationals with a fourth-place time of 30:25.70.

Redshirt-sophomore Tommy Crum Jr. finished one spot behind in fifth, delivering a steady performance and a time of 30:30.20. It is his second straight All-Region performance and Top 8 regional finish.

Senior Ryan Wolfe made it three straight All-Region honors with his highest finish to date at the regional championships, placing 12th overall with a time of 31:14.

Junior Ben Devine continued his breakthrough season with an All-Region performance in his first collegiate 10K, running just two spots behind Wolfe for a 14th-place finish of 31:22.40.

It takes five runners to complete a team score, and sophomore Ramon Urena functioned as the other bookend to the Raider victory. Urena, who dealt with injury earlier this season, battled to a 27th-place finish – just two spots shy of All-Region honors – with a time of 32:00.70.

Freshman Ben Hummel had a splendid 10K and regional championship debut, finishing five seconds behind Urena for 33rd place overall. Junior Brennan Wellock ran 45th with a time of 32:21.

Ironically, Shippensburg's score was 15 points off its pace of last year, but enough to get the job done this season. Last year, Davis & Elkins won by placing 1-4-6-14-15 while SU went 2-5-7-13-18.

The 2025 NCAA Division II National Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The race will be held at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course and be hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside.

It will be the 24th NCAA Men's Cross Country National Championships appearance in school history.
