The Shippensburg University women's basketball team fell behind early and could not make up the deficit Monday in a road setback to Bowie State at A.C. Jordan Arena, 83-54.
Shippensburg (1-3) guard
Melana Eyer poured in 20 second-half points, including a career-high four made three-pointers, on her way to a career-high 22 points scored.
Michelle Olak (Montreal, Canada/Westtown School) added 10 points and five rebounds.
Bowie State (3-1) outscored Shippensburg 44-18 in the first half, building up a 26-to-1 advantage in points off turnovers, a 24-to-2 edge in fastbreak points and a 24-to-8 advantage in points in the paint.
The Raiders shot just 22.2 percent from the field (6-27) in the first 20 minutes and committed 16 first half turnovers against the Bulldogs' full court pressure defense. Bowie State, meanwhile, converted 53.6 percent of their first half shots from the field (15-28), including 66.7 percent in the first quarter.
Shippensburg was able to shake off its rough start, shooting 38.5 percent (5-13) in the third quarter and winning the turnover battle (3-to-4).
The Raiders went on to out-score the Bulldogs 21-16 in the fourth quarter; SU converted 7-of-10 (70 percent) in the final ten minutes. SU heated up from beyond the arc during that stretch, going 4-of-8 from long range (50.0 percent). Eyer buried three triples, including two on back-to-back Raider possessions.
Abbie Johns also buried a three.
Johns and
Lauren Marton both finished with seven points.
Malaka Cobb paced the Bulldogs with 15 points and five steals.
Shippensburg returns to action at Chestnut Hill Monday at 5 p.m.
