The Shippensburg University volleyball team fell in four sets at Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday night. Set scores were 25-15, 12-25, 24-26 and 23-25.
Shippensburg (20-8, 12-2) ended the match with a .116 hitting percentage and recording 45 kills. Kutztown (15-13, 7-7) delivered 55 kills and hit .156 from the floor. The Raiders out blocked the Golden Bears 12 to five. Kutztown delivered six aces to Shippensburg's five.
Gracen Nutt recorded her first double-double of the season and second of her career, finishing with 11 kills and 21 digs. Nutt tacked on a block assist and a solo block.
Kearstin Davis and
Jaiden Anderson shared the setting duties, with Davis contributing 21 assists and Anderson adding 19. Davis added two aces and 12 digs.
Shay Kolivoski led the SU defense with 22 digs and tacked on an ace and two assists.
With set one tied at three, SU completed a 6-0 run that featured an ace from Kolivoski and a kill from
Elise Bragg (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton), 9-3. The Raiders increased their lead with a 3-0 run, 12-4. The Golden Bears went on a 2-0 run to cut the margin to five, 13-7. Solo blocks from
Isabelle Bombas and
Kylie Snyder sparked a 4-0 SU spurt to make it 18-7. Bombas delivered a kill to put the Raiders two points away from a set one win, but Kutztown answered with a late 5-0 run. A kill from
Clara Wildermuth and a Kutztown error gave the set one win to the Raiders, 25-15.
Kutztown opened set two with a 6-2 scoring stretch. The Raiders came within three before the Golden Bears completed a 4-1 scoring stretch to increase their lead to 11-5. Kutztown saw the margin expand to double digits, 16-6, which was ultimately too large for the Raiders and the Golden Bears claimed set two to even the match at 1-1.
SU saw their first lead of the third set after a 4-0 run, 8-5. An ace from
Berkley Simmons increased the advantage, 10-6. Kutztown cut the deficit to one after a 3-0 run. Kills from
Hailey Cappleman and Wildermuth put SU up by three, 13-10. The Golden Bears responded with a 3-0 run of their own to take the lead, 16-15, and a 3-1 scoring stretch from Kutztown increased kept the hosts in front, 19-17. A kill from Nutt and a block from Snyder and Cappleman gave the lead back to SU, 20-19. The Golden Bears took the lead once more at 23-21. A block from Cappleman and Wildermuth and a kill from Nutt tied the set at 23. SU arrived at set point after a Golden Bear error, but Kutztown delivered three straight points to take set three, 26-24.
Kutztown claimed the first lead of the fourth set after a 4-0 run, 12-8. The Raiders came within one after a 2-0 run, 13-12. A kill from Bombas and a Golden Bear attack error tied the set at 16. With the set tied at 21, Kutztown completed a 2-0 run, 23-21. SU came within one after a Golden Bear error, 23-22. Kutztown arrived at set point after a kill, 24-22. Nutt answered with a kill before Kutztown closed the match with a block, 25-23.
Kutztown was led by Madilyn Bogovic, who recorded 19 kills with a .250 hitting percentage. Emma Baldridge controlled the Golden Bear offense with 43 assists. Saige Thibodeaux posted a match-high 35 digs and added six assists.
With the loss and an East Stroudsburg win over Shepherd, Shippensburg will be the No. 2 East seed in the PSAC Tournament.
The Raiders will host No. 3 West seed Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday with a start time of 7 p.m. at Heiges Field House.
