RECAP: No. 2 Field Hockey drops regular-season finale at No. 1 Kutztown, 2-0

Raiders will enter the PSAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed

The Shippensburg University field hockey team was held scoreless in its regular-season finale on Saturday night, falling 2-0 at No. 1 Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Andre Reed Stadium.

In a game that featured just five combined shots on goal, it was Shippensburg (14-3, 6-3 PSAC) that finished with a 3-2 statistical edge in the category.

Kutztown (18-0, 9-0) capitalized when it earned its opportunities. At the 6:55 mark, a long hit found its way into the scoring circle and was nudged over to Julia Traynor, who turned around and scored to make it 1-0 in favor of the Golden Bears.

In a tightly played contest, Traynor's tally was the only shot on goal of the first half by either team.

SU had its best scoring chances late, including three of its four penalty corners in the final 15 minutes. With 5:20 to go, the Raiders nearly found the equalizer, as a shot by Carme Caracotche Picone rolled just wide of the far post.

KU iced it with 2:14 remaining when it converted on its fifth and final penalty corner. A shot from the back of the circle by Ellie Myers went five-hole, clicked off the back of the pads of goalkeeper Emma Albee and into the air. Jessica Traynor, standing at the far post, swatted the carom out of the air and into the goal to create the final 2-0 margin.

Saturday's match was the first meeting between the two teams since last year's national semifinal; it was a far cry from that contest which featured a combined seven goals, 20 shots on goal and 22 penalty corners.

With its win, KU has now won back-to-back meetings over the Raiders for the first time since 2007-08.

At the completion of the regular season, Shippensburg earned the No. 3 seed in next week's PSAC Tournament. The Raiders will host No. 6 seed Bloomsburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a conference quarterfinal at Robb Sports Complex.

The winner of that game will advance to face No. 2 seed East Stroudsburg at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Kutztown. By virtue of their undefeated regular the season, the Golden Bears will host the PSAC Semifinals and Championship Game next weekend at Andre Reed Stadium.
