SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team got a pair of second-half goals from
McKenna Boyle and goalkeeper
Emma Albee set a school record with her 25th career shutout as the Raiders defeated No. 6 Bloomsburg, 2-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Quarterfinal at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (15-3) avenged a regular-season loss to Bloomsburg (13-5) to advance to the PSAC Semifinals for the 32nd time in the 46-year history of the conference tournament. The Raiders finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.
In the opening 14 minutes, the only shot on goal was a dangerous tip-in attempt by Husky forward Genna Bush off a hard hit that originated outside the circle. It was the first of seven saves on the day by Albee and the only stop she needed to make in the first half.
SU fired two shots on goal in the final minute of the first quarter and then tilted the field a bit in the second half, earning five penalty corners. Bloomsburg goalkeeper Maura Greek, ranked second in the nation in shutouts (nine) behind Albee, was up to the task with four first-half saves.
Just over two minutes into the third quarter, the Raiders converted on the remnants of a penalty corner as Boyle fired a turnaround shot into the lower right portion of the cage for her fifth goal of the season. It was the second of two corners earned in a short time span and started out ominously, as the insert rolled over the stick of two Raiders.
Kayla Snyder collected the ball and dribbled to the right edge of the circle, where she delivered a centering pass. After it bounced off Boyle's stick and then a defender's, the ball went back to Boyle, who pirouetted into space to make room for the decisive shot.
The vigilance of
Elaina Fragassi ultimately led to the successful corner. Fragassi used an active stick to poke-check the ball away from a Husky defender. After winning a 1-v-1 battle, she gained possession around the 23-meter line and advanced into the circle, where she was fouled.
Both teams began to ramp up the attack in the third quarter, as Albee and Greek had to each make three saves. Another big stop in the frame was a defensive save by Alyx Flick, who used a low stick to deny
Savannah Silvestre on a low, bouncing shot that rolled past Greek and appeared ticketed for the left corner.
The best chance for the Huskies to obtain their equalizer came with 6:50 to go on a penalty corner, but Albee made a pair of saves in quick succession to negate the opportunity.
Boyle's second and final goal came in the final 20 seconds. A pass by
Carme Caracotche Picone made its way into the circle, where Greek attempted to steer it out with her blocker. The carom went to Boyle, who slammed it into the open cage.
Albee passed Ally Mooney (24 shutouts from 2014-18) for SU's career shutouts record. Her career record is now 48-9 and her 236 career saves rank 10th all-time among Raiders.
Tuesday marked the second straight year that the two teams met in the PSAC Tournament following last year's 2-1 semifinal overtime victory by the Raiders.
Shippensburg will face East Stroudsburg at 5:30 p.m. Friday in a PSAC Semifinal at Kutztown's Andre Reed Stadium.
