RECAP: No. 2 Field Hockey shuts out Slippery Rock, 3-0

Fragassi scores twice; Madeja adds one as Raiders hold SRU without a shot on goal

The No. 2-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team scored two goals in the opening 17 minutes Wednesday to fuel a 3-0 shutout at Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Shippensburg (13-2, 5-2 PSAC) controlled possession throughout the contest and capitalized with two goals in a span of 4:20. The first was the result of an excellent 40-yard run up the left wing by Gabby Wameling, who sent a cross-crease pass that Annika Madeja tipped just over the goal line to open the scoring.

It was Madeja's second career goal and Wameling's first career point.

Elaina Fragassi finished a long run up the right side with a spin move in the circle that made the score 2-0 just 1:50 into the second quarter.

In the final two minutes, Fragassi scored her second goal of the match off a centering feed from Carme Caracotche Picone.

The goals were Fragassi's seventh and eighth of the season, tying her for the team lead.

Wameling nearly scored her first collegiate goal late in the third quarter but a lofted shot was denied by SRU back Christina Clymer – whose chest-high stick stop resulted in a defensive save.

Slippery Rock (5-9, 1-6) had an excellent opportunity to halve its deficit with seven minutes left in the second quarter. Lucy Hutchinson dribbled through a couple of defenders and sent a high reverse hit that rang off the crossbar.

Overall, Shippensburg's defense yielded just one additional shot the entire contest. Neither ended up on target, as the Raiders finished with a 15-0 advantage in shots on goal. Penalty corners were 3-1 in SU's favor.

Wednesday's game was the second matchup of the year between the two teams. SU won a home non-conference contest, 4-0, back on Sept. 19.

Emma Albee did not have to record a save in achieving her NCAA Division II-leading 10th shutout of the season. Leah Riegling made 11 saves for The Rock.

Shippensburg hosts Mansfield at 2 p.m. Saturday for Senior Day at Robb Sports Complex. Before the game, the team will honor five players: Albee, Lilly Cantabene, Agus Garibaldi, Kelly Naudé and Savannah Silvestre.
