RECAP: No. 2 Field Hockey falls to No. 6 Bloomsburg in shootout, 1-0

Bloomsburg won decisive shootout by a 2-1 score

The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team battled No. 6 Bloomsburg through 60 scoreless minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods before falling 1-0 via shootout in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action Saturday at Steph Pettit Stadium.

Shippensburg (12-2, 4-2 PSAC) fell to Bloomsburg (12-2, 4-2) in the shootout by a 2-1 score. Its only tally in the shootout coming off the stick of Elaina Fragassi. Morgan Magditch and Kate Ferguson converted for the Huskies, while Bloomsburg goalie Maura Greek turned aside four of the Raiders' five attempts in the tiebreaker.

Shippensburg was the team more likely to score in regulation, out-shooting Bloomsburg 17-to-9, including a 9-to-2 advantage in attempts on goal. The Raiders also doubled up on the Huskies in terms of penalty corners (8-to-4).

Some of the Raiders best opportunities came in the second overtime period, with chances coming from Hannah White, Anne Gardner, Carme Caracotche Picone and Fragassi.

Shippensburg goalie Emma Albee made a key save on a point-blank attempt from Bloomsburg's Sophie Lawler during the first overtime period.

The first five shootout takers for both sides were unable to convert against Albee and Greek in goal. Fragassi canceled out Magditch's tally before Ferguson came through with the decisive conversion on the fifth and final leg.

Greek totaled nine saves for Bloomsburg.

With the loss, the Raiders drop into a three-way tie for second place in the league along with Bloomsburg and West Chester, two games behind league leaders Kutztown. ESU, with a win tonight, would also be tied for second place.

Shippensburg is back on the road Wednesday at Slippery Rock. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.
