The Shippensburg University men's basketball team dropped a 98-79 decision at Millersville on Friday night in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both teams at Pucillo Gymnasium.
Shippensburg (4-8, 2-4 PSAC) got a game-high 25 points from redshirt-sophomore
Markus Frank – marking his 11th straight game in double figures – but the Raiders could not overcome a slow start and 18 total turnovers.
Millersville (8-5, 4-2) made its first nine field-goal attempts and never trailed. It held early leads of 10-0 and 20-9 en route to a 50-34 halftime advantage. The Marauders shot 58.3 percent (21-of-36) in the first half and 52.6 percent for the game as five players finished in double figures. Drew Stover paced the hosts with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
SU tried to chip away at its deficit but could not get any closer than a pair of brief seven-point margins in the first half. After making 11 field goals in the first half, the Raiders opened the first 13 minutes of the second half by shooting 12-of-19 (63.1 percent) from the floor, yet the deficit was only reduced to 11 points before the Marauders countered.
Frank's 25 points came on 9-of-16 shooting in 25 minutes off the bench. He added four rebounds and two blocks.
Freshman
Jaydon Smith scored 17 points, two off his career high, on a 7-of-12 effort from the floor. Smith made both of his three-point attempts and contributed a team-high three assists in addition to two steals.
Fellow freshman
David Dorsey scored 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench, shooting an efficient 3-of-4 from the floor and making all three of his free-throw attempts. It was Dorsey's third game in double figures this season.
Junior
Trey Martin totaled eight points, three rebounds and two assists. Junior point guards
Timmy Conner and
Jalen Bowie each scored six points.
The hosts out-rebounded Shippensburg by 12 and committed just 10 turnovers. It marked Millersville's most points against the Raiders since 1971.
Shippensburg hosts Bloomsburg at 8 p.m. Monday at Heiges Field House.
