The No. 3 Shippensburg University field hockey team scored three goals in each half Saturday to conclude its weekend in North Carolina with a 6-0 neutral-site victory over Belmont Abbey in a game played at Mount Olive.
Â
Shippensburg (2-0) got two goals from junior All-American
Agus Garibaldi in a 2:37 span early in the second quarter to get the Raiders on the board and senior
Alexa Michielsen added a third goal before halftime. Senior
Yasmin De Meyer assisted both of Garibaldi's goals.
Â
Belmont Abbey (0-2) remained even with Shippensburg through the first quarter but was held without a shot in the process. The Crusaders managed just three shots on goal in the contest, while the Raiders finished with 16. Corners were 6-4 in SU's favor.
Â
Not quite four minutes into the second half, senior
Ashley Button fired home her second collegiate goal on a clapper from the top of the circle to make it 4-0. Sophomore
Carme Caracotche Picone (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Instituto San Alberto) recorded her second career assist on the play, as she had dribbled around the drawn-out goalkeeper in the crease and deftly maneuvered a pass back to Button.
Â
Just three minutes later, freshman
Anne Gardner added her second goal in as many days by slamming home a rebound, making it 5-0.
Â
On a fourth-quarter penalty corner, sophomore
Mckenna Boyle scored her first career goal in the run of play to round out the scoring. It was Boyle's fourth career goal; her previous three tallies had come via penalty strokes. Junior defender
Savannah Silvestre got the assist on Boyle's goal for the penalty-corner insert.
Â
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Emma Albee posted her second straight shutout, recording three saves in the win.
Â
Shippensburg will have its home opener at 3 p.m. Friday against New Haven.
