SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 3 Shippensburg University field hockey team turned the tides on visiting New Haven after the intermission Friday, scoring six times in the second half en route a 9-0 victory over the Chargers on a sunny and warm afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (3-0) and New Haven (1-1) were within one goal with nine minutes to play in the opening half before a pair of Raider tallies 48 seconds apart stretched the home lead to 3-0 – a margin that lasted into halftime. Â
Â
In the second half, the Raiders scored three goals in each quarter and recorded 22 of their 30 shots on goal. Seven different SU players finished with at least one goal, while three SU players had assists.
Â
Junior
Agus Garibaldi and sophomore
Mckenna Boyle each scored twice. Garibaldi assisted on the opening tally, which was a layup for freshman
Anne Gardner with 5:04 left in the first quarter.
Â
The play started in the SU backfield, where sophomore back
Kayla Snyder intercepted a pass in the scoring circle and dished the ball to senior
Emilia Conners. Conners fed Gardner, who was streaking up the middle of the field. She out-ran two Charger midfielders and sent a perfect feed to Garibaldi on the right wing to create a 2-on-1. Garibaldi then sent it back to Gardner in the crease for a tap-in.
Â
With just more than eight minutes left in the first half, Garibaldi converted a penalty stroke to make it 2-0. Forty-eight seconds later, off a penalty corner, Boyle slammed home her first of the day off the insert from freshman
Emily Bitters.
Â
Six minutes into the third quarter, senior
Taryn Mayer stole a pass and then dribbled through three defenders to fire home her first goal of the year, making it 4-0. With eight minutes left in the third, SU scored again off a corner – this time it was freshman
Elaina Fragassi firing home a rebound for her first collegiate tally. Boyle scored with just more than a minute left in the third for her second goal of the day.
Â
Less than 90 seconds into the fourth quarter, Bitters finished a rebound at the goal line on another penalty corner to make it 7-0. Later in the frame, Garibaldi tapped home a centering feed from senior
Nya Gilchrist and senior
Alexa Michielsen fired home a penalty-corner insert from Bitters to round out the scoring.
Â
New Haven goalkeeper Cara Lambert put forth a valiant effort in goal, making several splendid saves at close-range. Lambert finished with 21 saves – the most by an opposing goalkeeper in a single game against the Raiders since the 2021 season.
Â
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Emma Albee posted her third consecutive shutout to start the season, recording three saves in the victory.
Â
Shippensburg is right back at it tomorrow with a matchup against a Top 5 opponent. The No. 3-ranked Raiders host No. 4 Assumption at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Robb Sports Complex. The Greyhounds (2-0) have posted road victories this season at No. 6 West Chester and at No. 2 East Stroudsburg.
