SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with regional rival Frostburg State on Thursday night but conceded a late goal to the Bobcats, falling 1-0 to the visitors in the season opener for both teams at David See Field.
Shippensburg (0-1-0) matched Frostburg State (1-0-0) in shots on goal (three each) and out-cornered the Bobcats by a 5-4 margin. The match was a spirited affair with possession mostly in the midfield.
With less than six minutes remaining, the visitors achieved the decisive tally. On a corner kick by Carolyn DeSena, Catherine Smith found the ball and sent it toward the goal. The shot ricocheted off a defender and redshirt-freshman
Kirstin Brown got to it, but the ball had gone just over the end line by the time of her arrival.
Frostburg, back-to-back NCAA Tournament qualifiers, held the Raiders at bay after the goal to claim the match.
The contest marked the collegiate debuts for Brown,
Lannah Werynski,

Shippensburg hosts Saint Michael's at 1 p.m. Saturday at David See Field.
