RECAP: Volleyball snaps skid with pair of wins at PSAC/MEC Crossover

SU defeats West Liberty, 3-1, and West Virginia State, 3-2

UPDATE: Kylie Snyder was named to the PSAC/MEC Crossover All-Tournament Team on Saturday night.

The Shippensburg University volleyball team picked up a pair of wins at the PSAC/MEC Crossover hosted by West Liberty, as the Raiders defeated the host Hilltoppers in four before winning a five-set thriller over West Virginia State.
 
Shippensburg (3-8) finished the day with 106 kills, hitting .113 over the course of the two matches. The Raiders collected 19 service aces compared to four by its opponents.
 
Senior Emily Gardner paced the Raider offense with a total of 30 kills, leading the Raiders on offense in both matches.
 
The defense was led by sophomore libero Shay Kolivoski with 41 digs. Kolivoski added a team-high seven aces. Six of those aces came in the match against West Liberty, a new career high for the sophomore.
 
Junior Kearstin Davis dished out 86 assists and five service aces over the matches.
 
Shippensburg returns to action with its home opener at 7 p.m. Friday against PSAC Eastern Division opponent Shepherd.
 
Ship 3, West Liberty 1 (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20)
 
Set one started in favor of West Liberty, 5-2. Kills from sophomore Hailey Cappleman and sophomore Kylie Snyder plus a West Liberty error gave the Raiders the lead at 6-5. The Raiders increased the lead after a 4-0 run, 13-10. SU reached set point with a kill from junior Isabelle Bombas, a service ace from senior Erica Lampus and two West Liberty errors, 24-18. Bombas closed the set with a block, 25-20.
 
The Toppers took a 4-0 lead to begin the set. Kolivoski contributed five service aces to the Raiders 7-0 scoring run, 9-5. A 4-0 run with a Cappleman kill and three West Liberty errors added to the lead, 14-7. Sophomore Natalya Montague, Davis and Gardner recorded three kills, 18-8. Bombas ended the set with a kill, 25-17.
 
Set three was a back-and-forth battle as the teams tied 15 different times throughout the set. The Raiders took their biggest lead of the set at 21-18. The Toppers completed a 4-0 run to gain the lead at 22-21. The teams tied at 23-23, but West Liberty recorded a 2-0 run to end set three.
 
SU took early control of the fourth set with a 6-0 scoring run, 10-5. Senior Kat Negron (Longwood, Fla./Lyman) recorded back-to-back service aces to add to the lead, 13-6. An 8-2 scoring stretch from West Liberty tied the set at 15-15. The Raiders regained the lead with a Bombas kill and a Hilltopper error, 20-17. West Liberty responded to tie the set at 20-20. A kill from Bombas and three Hilltopper errors put the Raiders at match point. Gardner recorded the last kill for the Raiders to take the match 3-1.
 
Shippensburg collected 45 kills and a .121 hitting percentage. The Raiders controlled the service line with 11 aces, six of those from Kolivoski. Gardner paced the offense with 11 kills. Davis collected 39 assists and added three kills.
 
West Liberty recorded 49 kills and 13 blocks. Kiya White led the offense with a match-high 14 kills. Dakota Keni delivered 21 assists for the Hilltoppers.
 
Ship 3, West Virginia State 2 (25-22, 26-24, 20-25, 15-25, 15-10)
 
The Raiders came from behind to lead the first set at 7-6 with two kills from Bombas and one from Gardner. West Virginia State recorded a 3-0 run, 11-9. SU took control of the set with a 4-0 run off kills from Cappleman and Gardner and two Yellow Jacket errors to lead 17-14. West Liberty took the lead at 21-20, but the Raiders responded with a 4-0 run to bring them to set point. Snyder delivered the set-point kill for the Raiders, 25-22.
 
With both teams tied at 3-3 in the second set, West Virginia State claimed the lead after a 4-0 scoring run, 6-3. The Yellow Jackets increased the lead with a 9-2 scoring stretch, 12-5. SU answered with a 6-1 scoring run to cut the deficit, 16-13. Momentum stayed in favor of the Yellow Jackets, 21-13. The Raiders were able to hold the Yellow Jackets at match point with two kills from Gardner and a kill from Snyder, 24-22. Davis served an ace to put the Raiders within one, 24-23. A kill from Gardner tied the set at 24-24. Davis served back-to-back aces to end the set at 26-24.
 
SU pulled ahead early in the third set, 7-2. The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to two, 10-8 and took over the lead at 17-16. West Virginia controlled the rest of the set as SU was never able to regain the lead, 25-20.
 
Momentum stayed with the Yellow Jackets as they took an early 8-3 lead in the fourth set. SU was never able to come within more than five points of West Virginia State. The Yellow Jackets forced the fifth set with a 25-15 set victory.
 
The Raiders began the fifth set with a 4-1 scoring stretch to take the lead. SU remained ahead until the Yellow Jackets went on a 3-0 and tied the set at 8-8. Freshman Sophia Barrera served two back-to-back service aces and helped put the Raiders ahead at 13-8. A kill from Bombas claimed the match for the Raiders, 3-2.
 
Shippensburg recorded 61 kills with a .105 hitting percentage. The Raiders added eight blocks, with half of those coming in the fifth set. Bombas, Montague and Snyder all contributed three blocks. Gardner led the offense with a match-high 19 kills. Davis added 47 assists and two service aces. 
 
West Virginia State collected 52 kills, hitting .181 and added 14 blocks. Maureen Mathews paced the Yellow Jackets with 17 kills. Nicole Gartner Custodio recorded seven blocks. Kiersten Eggleton led with 40 assists.
