RECAP: Volleyball drops pair of Saturday matches at Crimson Hawk Classic

Raiders fall in four sets to West Virginia State and Ashland

The Shippensburg University volleyball team dropped a pair of contests on the final day of the Crimson Hawk Classic, first falling to West Virginia State in four sets before losing to Ashland in four sets.  
 
Shippensburg (1-6) finished the day hitting .118 with 103 kills. Senior Emily Gardner paced the Raiders with 22 kills on the day. Junior Isabelle Bombas and sophomore Hailey Cappleman added 16 kills apiece.
 
On defense, sophomore Shay Kolivoski collected 49 digs. Junior Kearstin Davis recorded 80 assists over the course of two matches.
 
Shippensburg returns to action Friday when it travels to the PSAC/MEC Crossover. Friday, the team is at Wheeling, where the Raiders will take on Fairmont State at 11 a.m. and the hosts at 4 p.m.
 
West Virginia State 3, Ship 1 (25-17, 20-25, 18-25, 19-25)
 
The teams remained tied in the first set until the Raiders pulled away with a 9-2 scoring stretch and made the score 17-10. A kill from senior Maddie Clabaugh and an ace from Kolivoski added to the lead, 19-11. The Yellow Jackets tried to come back with a late 3-0 scoring run at 19-14. The Raiders closed the set at 25-17 with kills from three different Raiders: Clabaugh, Bombas and Negron.
 
The second set started in favor of the Yellow Jackets as they opened with a 4-1 scoring stretch. SU closed the lead to 4-3 with kills from Negron and Gardner. West Virginia State responded with a 7-1 scoring stretch that gave it the lead at 11-4. The Raiders answered with a 6-0 run with two service aces from junior Berkley Simmons and kills from Gardner and Cappleman. SU gained the lead at 14-13 off of a Yellow Jacket error. The Yellow Jackets controlled the rest of the set after a 3-0 run at 16-14. West Virginia State ended the set with a 5-1 scoring stretch, 25-20.
 
The Raiders opened set three with a Bombas kill and an ace from Davis to take an early lead, 2-0. The Yellow Jackets used four Raider errors and a kill to their advantage at 5-3. Gardner delivered two back-to-back service aces and put the Raiders ahead at 11-8. West Virginia State completed an 8-1 scoring run, 19-14. SU was unable to cut the deficit and the Yellow Jackets claimed the set at 25-18.
 
The Yellow Jackets collected the first two points of the fourth set with kills. SU responded with a 5-0 run. An 8-1 scoring run put the momentum in favor of the Yellow Jackets at 10-6. The Raiders were not able to gain the lead in the set as West Virginia State claimed the match, 3-1.
 
Shippensburg collected 53 kills and 10 services aces in the match. Gardner led the offense with a match-high 15 kills and added two services aces. Clabaugh and Negron each tacked on eight kills of their own. Davis contributed 40 assists.
 
West Virginia State recorded 44 kills in the match with a .254 hitting percentage. Their defense added 15 blocks to the match, led by Nicole Gartner Custodio with 10. Hannah Steele paced the offense with 14 kills and Kiersten Eggleton dished out 31 assists.
 
Ashland 3, Ship 1 (17-25, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25)
 
SU gained its first points with a kill from freshman Clara Wildermuth and an Ashland error to tie the set at 2-2. A 5-0 run put the Eagles ahead, 12-6. The Raiders tried to catch the Eagles lead and got within two points at 19-17. Ashland finished the set with a kill to cap a 6-0 run.
 
Ashland kept the momentum early in the second set with a 4-0 run, 5-2. The Raiders responded with a 7-1 scoring stretch with kills from sophomore Natalya Montague, Gardner, Cappleman and Bombas to gain the lead at 11-8. The Eagles came back and tied the set at 13-13. The teams battled back and forth for the rest of the set, with neither team leading by more than two points. SU used a block from Montague and Cappleman and two Eagle errors to close the set, 25-22.
 
The Eagles opened set three with a 6-0 run. The Raiders completed a 3-0 run at 10-5 to close in on the Eagles. Ashland answered with a 4-0 run and increased their lead to 17-9. Kills from Davis and Cappleman and two Ashland errors allowed the Raiders to come within five, 17-12. SU tried to close in on Ashland with a 6-1 scoring stretch and came within three at 24-21. Ashland ended the set at 25-21.
 
Davis started the fourth set off with a service ace. The teams remained close until the Eagles recorded a 3-0 scoring run that put them ahead at 12-9. SU answered with a kill from Montague and two from junior Kayla Johnson and tied the set at 12-12. Ashland gained momentum with an 8-1 scoring stretch and made it 20-13. A 6-0 scoring run with a kill and two blocks from Bombas, a Johnson kill, and two Eagle errors cut Ashland's lead to 24-22. Ashland closed the match with a kill.
 
Shippensburg collected 50 kills in the match. Bombas led the Raiders with 10 kills, a .500 hitting percentage, and added three blocks. Davis recorded 40 kills and Kolivoski added 29 digs.
 
Ashland recorded 56 kills in the match with a .244 hitting percentage. The Eagles added 11 blocks and were led by Livi Miller with six. Their offense was led by Graceann Hartman who recorded a match-high 18 kills. Kylee Urban contributed 40 assists for the Eagles.
