The Shippensburg University lacrosse team led East Stroudsburg on two separate occasions, putting forth a spirited effort in a loss to the No. 5-ranked Warriors in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East competition Saturday at Whitenight Field, 20-11.
Shippensburg (2-8, 0-5 PSAC East) scored four straight goals to lead the Warriors, 4-3, in the final minute of the first quarter, and a second quarter run had the Raiders up on their nationally-ranked foes by a many as two goals, 6-4.
The Raiders were aided by an excellent afternoon on draws, winning the draw control battle against the Warriors 22-to-13.
East Stroudsburg (7-3, 3-2) scored the final six goals of the second quarter to regain the lead and a stranglehold on the contest. Emily Mitarotonda was responsible for half the Warriors' tallies. The ESU star contributed a total of 10 goals, one assist, seven groundballs, five caused turnovers and five draw controls.
The Raiders erased an early 3-0 deficit on back-to-back goals from senior
Emily Fenwick, followed by a game-tying tally from sophomore
Keegan Dings and a go-ahead score from junior
Sara Vosburg.
The Warriors tied the score at 4-4 late in the first before goals from Fenwick and Vosburg gave the Raiders a two-goal cushion five minutes into the second frame.
Shippensburg got to within three goals of the Warriors (10-7) in the second half.
Vosburg led the Raider offense with four goals, and added two groundballs and three draw controls.
Fenwick recorded her first career hat trick. Dings (2), sophomore
Ali Pioli and sophomore
Shannon Wood rounded out the Raider goals. Pioli also led SU with seven draw controls.
The 11 goals scored by the Raiders are their most against East Stroudsburg in eight matches, dating back to April 2018 (a 19-11 loss).
Defensively, sophomore
Grace DeMarzio totaled three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Junior
Kayla Vosburg recorded 11 saves and four groundballs in the Raider goal.
Shippensburg returns home to take on Bloomsburg Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Robb Sports Complex.
