The Shippensburg University lacrosse team took a two-goal lead into the fourth quarter at Frostburg State on Saturday but could not maintain its advantage down the stretch, dropping an 11-9 decision to the hosts on a rainy afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (1-1) and Frostburg State (2-1) came down to the final minute for the second straight year; last year the Raiders claimed a 9-8 home victory over the Bobcats.
Â
Trailing 3-2 late in the first half, the Raiders scored three times in a 2:23 span to take a 5-3 lead into halftime. Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter, giving SU an 8-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Â
Frostburg goalkeeper Nicole Gray, who made a sensational 22 saves in last year's matchup between the two teams, was staunch once again. Gray made three saves down the stretch and kept the Raiders scoreless in the fourth quarter until an
Olivia Glinski goal got the Raiders within one, 10-9, with 1:12 left. Sophomore
Keegan Dings had a shot hit the post earlier in the quarter.
Â
Sophomore
Ali Pioli won the ensuing draw control after Glinski's goal, but Frostburg's Jessie Bare caused a turnover and the Bobcats killed the clock until icing it with a goal in the final seconds.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Kayla Vosburg kept the Raiders in it by making 15 saves – her most in a game since setting a career high of 17 saves against Shepherd as a first-year player in April 2022. It is the fourth time in her career that Vosburg has made 15 or more saves in a game.
Â
Junior attacker
Sara Vosburg continued her offensive success with three goals and two assists while recording three groundballs and a caused turnover. Pioli had four groundballs and matched sophomore teammate
Grace DeMarzio with a team-high three caused turnovers.
Â
Sara Vosburg and Pioli were solid on the draw and teamed up to win nine of SU's 11 draw controls (DeMarzio won the other two). Draws on the day were virtually even; Frostburg had 12 controls.
Â
Glinski finished with two goals and an assist, while junior
Jill Hopkins, Dings, first-year
Ava Collins and sophomore
Alyssa Krueger each added a goal. Krueger, Collins and senior
Emily Fenwick each recorded an assist.
Â
The Raider defense finished with 14 caused turnovers. Collins and junior
Annie Rathgeb each were credited with two.
Kayla Vosburg, Collins and junior
Francesca Picone collected multiple groundballs.
Â
Frostburg got four goals, an assist, and seven of its 12 draw controls from Neila Haney. Kerri Hayes achieved a hat trick, with all three of her goals coming in the fourth quarter. Maura O'Neill and Isabelle Kelly each had a game-high five caused turnovers for the Bobcats; Kelly also had five groundballs.
Shippensburg is back in action at noon Saturday at Wilmington (Del.).
