The Shippensburg University lacrosse team outscored Holy Family 6-0 in the third quarter Saturday and held the hosts scoreless for a 34-minute span to flip the momentum and win its 2024 season opener, defeating the Tigers by a score of 17-7 in action at Tiger Field.

Shippensburg (1-0) trailed Holy Family (0-1) by one, 5-4, with 7:05 left in the second quarter. The Raiders proceeded to hold the Tigers scoreless until the final three minutes of the game, scoring twice before halftime as part of a match-altering 12-0 run. SU led 6-5 at halftime, 12-5 after three quarters and 16-5 with 3:01 to go before Holy Family ended its scoring drought.
Junior
Sara Vosburg erupted for five goals in the opener, marking the third time in her career that she has scored five or more goals in a game. Her all-around game included three caused turnovers, four draw controls and three groundballs.

First-year
Alexa Bailey recorded a hat trick in her collegiate debut, as she came off the bench to score on all three of her shots on goal and added two assists for a five-point opener.

SU received a total of 11 points (six goals, five assists) from first-year players in the contest, as
Ava Collins recorded two goals, two assists and a caused turnover in her first start while
Olivia Glinski had a goal and an assist in her first start.

Senior
Payton Margerum entered Saturday with two career points (one goal, one assist) through 23 career games. Margerum finished Saturday having had a day to remember – scoring two goals and delivering a team-high three assists off the bench in addition to a caused turnover.

Sophomore
Keegan Dings scored twice and was one of four Raiders with three or more draw controls on the day. Dings had four along with Vosburg, while sophomore
Ali Pioli had a team-high five draw controls and junior
Jill Hopkins collected three. SU finished with a 17-11 edge overall in draw controls.

Sophomore
Shannon Wood had a goal and an assist while collecting a team-high five groundballs. Senior
Emily Fenwick had a goal and two assists. Pioli added an assist.

Along the back lines, first-year
Brynn Hauck impressed in her collegiate debut with a game-high four caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper
Kayla Vosburg made nine saves and also recorded two groundballs.

Holy Family got hat tricks from Maura Kilkenny and Tori Wolstenholme. Kilkenny was the top Tiger as she finished the day with five groundballs, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Olivia Kueny made 11 saves.

Saturday was the first of six consecutive road matches to start the season. The Raiders return to action next Saturday at noon at Frostburg State.
