SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team wrapped up the 2024 portion of its schedule Sunday afternoon with a matinee victory over NCAA Division III opponent Wilson, posting an 85-72 victory over the Phoenix in a matchup of local teams at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (4-7) got a game-high 24 points from redshirt-sophomore
Markus Frank, who was 10-of-13 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free-throw line. Frank, who came off the bench in both games this weekend, totaled 42 points over the last two days, shooting 17-of-28 (60.7 percent) overall.
Freshman
Jaydon Smith and junior
Trey Martin both finished with career highs in scoring. Smith poured in 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and was a blistering 5-of-7 from three-point range; he made his first five attempts from long range which marked another career high. He added three rebounds, three assists and three blocks without committing a turnover in 30 minutes of action.
Martin, whose defense was pivotal to yesterday's win over Clarion, played a team-high 34 minutes Sunday and was 7-of-12 from the floor – totaling 18 points. He also equaled his career high with six rebounds and did not commit a turnover.
Junior
Donovan Hill scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. Fellow junior
Denzel Figueroa had another solid effort with eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Freshman
David Dorsey led all players with a career-high nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
Wilson (4-8) stayed in the game by committing just seven turnovers and making nine three-pointers. Trea Keys led the Phoenix with 19 points and made three from long range. Armani Jones added 17 points, while Gary Robertson contributed 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals without committing a turnover.
SU was highly efficient – finishing the game 34-of-60 (56.7 percent) from the field. The Raiders shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30) in the second half. Shippensburg scored 54 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Phoenix by 10 (42-32).
The Raiders only trailed for a 32-second span in the opening two minutes of play. SU finished with 16 assists and committed only 11 turnovers.
Shippensburg returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3 at Millersville. It will be the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both teams.
