The Shippensburg University women's basketball team dropped its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener Saturday on the road at unbeaten Seton Hill, 101-75.
Shippensburg (1-3, 0-1 PSAC) got a breakout performance during the up-tempo matchup from freshman forward
Michelle Olak, who finished with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and seven rebounds. Sophomore
Bella Chimienti also poured in 14 points, while senior
Abbie Miller and sophomore
Alexis Buie scored 10 apiece.
Seton Hill (6-0, 2-0) forced 22 first half turnovers (30 overall) thanks to a pesky half-court trap defense. The Griffins shot 54.5% from the field and recorded 23 assists on 36 made baskets. Guard Christiane Frye led the way with 20 points and six assists. Hallie Cowan was perfect from the field, totaling 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting to go along with six assists and four steals.
The Raiders' best moments came early in the second quarter, when Olak's presence on both ends of the court allowed SU to cut into Seton Hill's initial lead.
Olak collected a steal and found senior
Taja Colbert on the break for a layup to make it a 10-point game, 30-20.
Colbert finished with eight points, seven assists and four rebounds. Olak also contributed two assists and two steals.
Freshman
McKenzie Thomas added a career-best seven points for SU.
In addition to turnovers, fouls also were an issue, as three Raiders – Olak, Miller and Colbert – fouled out of by the game's conclusion.
The Raiders return to action tomorrow with the makeup of Friday's postponed contest at IUP. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
