RECAP: No. 1 Field Hockey outlasts No. 5 West Chester, 3-1

De Meyer, Garibaldi net decisive fourth quarter goals

The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team used a furious finish to knock off No. 5 West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) battle Wednesday at WCU's Vonnie Gros Field, 3-1.

Shippensburg (10-0, 3-0 PSAC) broke a 1-1 stalemate through 45 minutes with decisive fourth quarter tallies from senior Yasmin De Meyer and junior Agus Garibaldi.

Both goals occurred inside the final 11 minutes. De Meyer hammered home her second goal of the contest off the rebound off a Shippensburg penalty corner. Garibaldi, who fired the initial shot, was credited with an assist.

Garibaldi got on the scoresheet just two minutes later, burying a rebound off a close-range attempt from senior Ashley Button to extend the Raider lead.

West Chester (7-4, 1-2) opened the scoring in the early stages of the second quarter, with Jasmine Miller depositing a hard, low attempt past redshirt-junior Emma Albee for just the second goal allowed by Albee this season.

De Meyer provided a quick answer, getting a stick to a cross from senior Valu Paul at the far post to level the score just three minutes later.

De Meyer's two goals equaled her season goal total entering play Wednesday and marked her first two-goal game since Sept. 23, 2023 at Bloomsburg.

Albee totaled seven saves in the SU cage, matching her season-high (seven in season opener at Mount Olive).

The win was Shippensburg's fifth victory over a nationally-ranked opponent (1-0 vs. No. 7 Mount Olive, 3-1 vs. No. 4 Assumption, 2-0 vs. No. 1 Kutztown, 3-0 vs. No. 4 Bloomsburg).

SU has now won nine straight games in the all-time series versus West Chester dating back to the beginning of the 2021 season, and SU has scored at least two goals in all nine of those games.

The Raiders return to action with a road matchup against No. 9 Mansfield Saturday at 1 p.m.
