RECAP: No. 1 Field Hockey posts convincing victory at No. 9 Mansfield, 6-1

SU get two tallies in three of the four quarters; Garibaldi and Boyle each score twice

The Shippensburg University field hockey team put forth an impressive performance on the road Saturday in dispatching No. 9 Mansfield, 6-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at sunny Karl Van Norman Field.

Shippensburg (11-0, 4-0 PSAC) scored twice in each of the first two quarters, with the first goal coming from the stick of senior Nya Gilchrist just 3:30 into the contest.

Mansfield (7-5, 1-2) got a goal just 52 seconds into the second half but it was the only time the hosts found the back of the cage. SU scored twice in the final eight minutes to create the final margin.

Shots on goal were 15-6 in SU's favor, and corners were 8-6 to the Raiders' advantage. Redshirt-junior Emma Albee made five saves for the Raiders – including four in the third quarter – while August Lewis made eight saves for the Mountaineers.

Junior Agus Garibaldi and sophomore Mckenna Boyle each scored twice, while Gilchrist and junior Lilly Cantabene added goals. Five different Raiders had an assist.

The opening goal was the result of a beautiful cross-circle feed from senior Yasmin De Meyer that was sent into space near the far post; Gilchrist ran onto the ball and redirected it home for the 1-0 lead.

With three minutes left in the first quarter, Boyle collected a rebound and created separation from the defense to fire a shot into the lower-left corner of the goal to make it 2-0.

Early in the second quarter, senior Alexa Michielsen juked a defender and sent a shot toward the cage that was deftly re-directed into the cage by Garibaldi. Just before halftime, Garibaldi took a penalty corner entry from junior Savannah Silvestre and fired a rocket into the lower left of the cage to give the Raiders the 4-0 halftime advantage.

Boyle's second goal was a finish of an original shot by Cantabene. Late in the game, senior Ashley Button fired a shot past a drawn-out Lewis that Cantabene tipped in from the left side of the cage.

Shippensburg returns to action at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a rematch against No. 2 Kutztown at Robb Sports Complex. The two teams previously met on Sept. 18 at Kutztown, a match the Raiders won 2-0.
