SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 decision against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opponent East Stroudsburg in its Saturday afternoon match at David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-5-2, 2-3-2 PSAC East) and East Stroudsburg (4-2-3, 2-2-3) played about as even a statistical match as two teams could. Shots on goal were 6-6, and corner kicks were 8-6 in SU's favor. Sophomore
Kirstin Brown and Emmy Clarkson each made five saves for their respective team.
In the 68th minute, freshman
Lannah Werynski chipped a ball past Clarkson that rolled into the goal to give SU a 1-0 lead. Werynski took advantage of a long pass from freshman
Cailin Spelman, who was credited with the assist. It was Werynski's first collegiate goal, and Spelman's first collegiate point.
East Stroudsburg answered in the 83rd minute with a goal off a header from Natalie Schooley. Abby James sent in the pass for the Warriors and Schooley was able to head the ball in the corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Shippensburg is at Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
