SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team scored three goals in a 2:37 span of the second quarter Saturday to gain separation from visiting Maryville en route to a 5-0 victory over the Saints on a sunny afternoon at Claudia Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (9-0) faced Maryville (4-4), an NCAA Division II school in St. Louis, for the first time Saturday, and the two teams played the opening 15 minutes scoreless.
Â
Early in the second quarter, senior
Nya Gilchrist took a nice feed from freshman
Anne Gardner and scored from close range in the right side of the circle to get the Raiders on the board.
Â
Two minutes later, SU scored twice in 22 seconds. The first was a rebound slammed home by junior
Agus Garibaldi for her ninth goal of the season. Shortly thereafter, sophomore
Mckenna Boyle sent a long hit into the scoring circle that senior
Valu Paul ramped into the air and into the cage for a nifty deflection that made it 3-0. It was Paul's fourth goal of the year.
Â
After a scoreless third quarter, senior
Emilia Conners took a subtle feed from freshman
Elaina Fragassi and, after a couple dribbles, slammed a deep reverse hit into the cage for her third career goal.
Â
Gilchrist later scored again by finishing a rebound with just more than five minutes remaining for her second goal of the day and fourth goal of the season.
Â
Redshirt-junior
Emma Albee needed to make just one save in recording her seventh shutout of the season.
Â
Garibaldi's goal is the 39th of her career and brought her to 100 career points. She became the 13th player in program history to reach 100 career points.
Â
SU finished with a 22-1 advantage in shots on goal and had 22 penalty corners without allowing one to the Saints.
Shippensburg returns to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at nationally-ranked West Chester.
