SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey team dispatched Frostburg State on Tuesday, 4-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup on a sunny and pleasant fall afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (16-0, 9-0 PSAC) completed its 2024 conference schedule without a loss, winning its nine games against PSAC opponents by a combined score of 30-7.
Â
Frostburg State (6-10, 2-6), in its first season as an associate member of the PSAC for field hockey, gave the Raiders all they could handle for the opening 35 minutes of play, producing three shots on goal and multiple scoring chances. Much like SU's last game against IUP, there was no score at halftime.
Â
The Raiders bombarded the Bobcats with 17 shots on goal in the second half, scoring twice in each of the final two quarters. Frostburg goalkeeper Zoe Barnes made a career-high 19 saves and was strong between the posts, keeping her team in the contest while under a steady barrage.
Â
The opening salvo came eight minutes into the third quarter when senior
Taryn Mayer gathered a rebound, dribbled to the top of the circle, and unleashed a hard shot that rolled past Barnes for her second goal of the season.
Â
With just more than two minutes left in the third quarter, senior
Yasmin De Meyer scored her first of two goals on the day with a diving tip-in at the far post after the ball was nudged her way by freshman
Anne Gardner following a rebound.
Â
SU scored twice in a 19-second span of the fourth quarter to pull away. De Meyer finished a centering feed from senior
Alexa Michielsen to make it 3-0, and shortly thereafter senior
Valu Paul gathered a rebound and lofted a shot high into the top corner for her fifth goal of the year. De Meyer's two goals bring her season total to seven.
Â
Frostburg never relented and pushed hard down the stretch, scoring less than two minutes after Paul's goal with a splendid redirect on a penalty corner. Emilie Bonhivert's initial shot was deflected in by Mikyla Rineer to get the Bobcats on the board.
Â
Redshirt-junior
Emma Albee finished with four saves for the Raiders.
Â
Overall, shots on goal were 23-5 in SU's favor, and the Raiders also registered 14 penalty corners to FSU's three.
Â
Shippensburg completes its regular season at 7 p.m. tomorrow with a non-conference match at IUP. It will be the second meeting between the two teams in the last five days, as the Raiders defeated the Crimson Hawks on Saturday at Robb Sports Complex, 4-0.
