The Shippensburg University football team's late comeback attempt fell short in a close loss to the Bloomsburg Huskies in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action Saturday at Redman Stadium, 20-10.
After trailing by 10 points late in the third quarter, Shippensburg (2-6, 1-4 PSAC East) lined up to try a 38-yard field goal that would have tied the score with 6:01 remaining. Freshman kicker
Wilson Ingerski, who set a new school record with a successful 54-yard field goal attempt in the first half, sent his second attempt of the game – this time into the teeth of the wind – wide of the uprights.
The Raiders out-rushed the Huskies 178 yards to 48 yards in the contest and totaled more first downs than the hosts (12-to-10). Freshman quarterback
Vincent Micucci led the rushing attack with 89 yards Saturday. Redshirt-junior
Tanner Hess contributed 58 yards on the ground.
Bloomsburg (4-4, 2-3) found success in the passing game – most notably big plays to wide receiver Owen Anderson. Anderson totaled 199 yards and two scores on just five catches – including a 79-yard TD reception at the start of the second quarter, and a 93-yard jaunt just before the half.
Trailing 13-3 in the third, Micucci found junior
Griffin Patterson over the middle for a 32-yard gain, putting the Raiders on the doorstep of the Bloomsburg goal line. Two plays later, Micucci entered the end zone from 4 yards out for the first rushing touchdown of his career. The score brought SU to within three points, 13-10.
Micucci was replaced at quarterback by sophomore
Sam Stoner after sustaining an injury early in the fourth quarter. Micucci exited with 82 yards passing in addition to his rushing output.
That did not stop the surging Raiders, as the SU offense later engineered a 55-yard drive – all on the ground – to set up the possible game-tying field goal. Hess and redshirt-sophomore
Josiah Leonard contributed runs of 20 and 17 yards, respectively, during the possession.
After the field goal miss, a Shippensburg turnover on downs deep in its own territory set up the Huskies' fourth and final touchdown, a 4-yard TD run from BU's Parker Riley.
Bloomsburg quarterback KJ Riley had a strong afternoon behind center, completing 16-of-22 pass attempts for 278 yards and two touchdowns.
Ingerski's successful 54-yard attempt shattered the old school record of 50 yards set by
Jaxson Montross on Sept. 4, 2021.
Several Raiders had fine defensive performances Saturday. Leading the way was senior linebacker
Javon M. Cruz, who totaled 10 tackles, including seven solo stops. Senior
TJ Wagner had a career day on the defensive line, posting two sacks and TFLs. Junior
DJ Jackson finished with five tackles (four solo) and two pass breakups.
Next week, the Raiders will conduct Senior Day as it hosts East Stroudsburg Saturday at 1 p.m. at Seth Grove Stadium.
