SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team defeated Lock Haven, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-5-1, 2-3-1 PSAC East) capitalized in the 69th minute for the match's lone tally. Senior
Olivia Stephen sent a free kick towards freshman
Lannah Werynski. The ball made its way to sophomore
Gabrielle Walker, who headed it into Werynski, who sent a header to junior
Ryleigh Cook, who found herself between four Lock Haven defenders.
Cook had the extra step and sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to score the only goal of the afternoon.
It marked Cook's first career goal, and Werynski's first collegiate point. It was the second assist of the season for Walker.
Lock Haven (1-4-3, 1-4-1) attempted to answer in the remaining 21 minutes, but the Raider defense stifled the Bald Eagles. SU maintained possession and ran out the clock for the remainder of the match.
Statistically, the Raiders edged the Bald Eagles in shots (15 to 11), shots on goal (eight to six), and corners (seven to zero). Sophomore
Kirstin Brown made six saves to record her first career shutout.
Shippensburg will host East Stroudsburg at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at David See Field.
