RECAP: No. 1 Field Hockey blanks Millersville, 1-0

Albee records sixth shutout; Garibaldi scores eighth goal of the season

Junior Agus Garibaldi converted a fourth-quarter penalty stroke and redshirt-junior goalkeeper Emma Albee recorded her sixth shutout in eight starts Wednesday night as the Shippensburg University field hockey team claimed a 1-0 victory over Millersville at the Biemesderfer.

Shippensburg (8-0, 2-0 PSAC) posted a 1-0 victory over Millersville (4-4, 1-1) for the second straight season, but unlike last year, the Raiders controlled the pace of play in this matchup. SU finished with a lopsided 14-2 advantage in shots on goal and had 15 penalty corners to MU's five.

The Marauders remained in the game thanks to the defensive efforts of backliner Caitlin Wasserman, who was credited with two defensive saves (giving her three against SU in the last two seasons), and goalkeeper Kerstin Koons, who tallied 11 saves. In six career matchups with Shippensburg, Koons has recorded 48 saves and allowed just eight goals.

Kept off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, Garibaldi's stroke came about as the result of a turnover forced by sophomore Mckenna Boyle. Shortly after a Millersville restart, Boyle stripped the ball from a Marauder defender and raced toward the cage, sending a cross-crease pass to Garibaldi – whose shot was stopped illegally by a defender with Koons out of the cage.

Garibaldi converted the stroke for her eight goal of the year and her third game-winner.

Albee finished with two saves – both during MU penalty corners – and teamed up with the defense for the team's third straight shutout. Through 450 minutes this season, Albee has yielded just one goal while making 25 total saves.

The victory marked Shippensburg's first at the Biemesderfer in five years (Oct. 8, 2019).

Shippensburg is home at 1 p.m. Saturday for its first-ever matchup with Maryville at Robb Sports Complex.
