RECAP: Women’s Basketball uses strong fourth quarter to win at Bloomsburg, 71-65

SU used a 26-6 run to take control in the second half

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team flipped a five-point halftime deficit into a 12-point lead with two minutes left to go Friday night to claim its first road victory and its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory of the season, defeating Bloomsburg by a 71-65 score at Nelson Field House.

Shippensburg (2-11, 1-6 PSAC) scored a season-high 71 points and committed a season-low 13 turnovers to snap a seven-game losing streak. SU was highly efficient from three-point range, making 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from long range, and finished 18-of-27 (66 percent) at the free-throw line — equaling a season-high in free throws made.

Bloomsburg (4-9, 2-5) had a balanced scoring attack, totaling 15 or more points in each quarter, while the Raiders scored 20 or more points in each quarter save for the second. SU opened the game with a 13-7 lead and maintained a 22-17 advantage after the first quarter but stalled offensively in the second quarter with just seven points.

The Huskies led 34-29 at halftime and led by as many as nine points in the third quarter. SU began its game-changing run with a 7-0 run in the final minute of the third quarter; it cut an eight-point deficit down to one, 50-49. Shippensburg opened the fourth quarter with a 16-4 run over the first five minutes to lead 65-54.

In total, it was a 26-6 run for the Raiders over 8:24.

Graduate Treasure George led all players with 23 points, finishing just one point shy of her career high. George made eight buckets, shot 4-of-8 from three-point range, grabbed five rebounds, and equaled a career high with four steals. It was her fifth career game scoring 20 or more points and her seventh straight game this season in double figures (10 or more points).

Freshman Bella Chimienti was sensational once again, posting a new career high in scoring for the second time in the last three games. Chimienti scored a career-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and made 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. It was her fifth time in double figures this season. Chimienti had a fantastic start, scoring 10 points in the first quarter on 3-of-3 shooting (including both of her three-pointers).

Junior Taja Colbert had a strong game with 13 points, marking her seventh double-digit output of the season. Colbert was 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line and added three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Three other Raiders – senior Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez, junior Abbie Miller and freshman Alexis Buie – each scored six points to account for the remainder of SU's scoring. Rodriguez Sanchez grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while Miller collected five rebounds.

Katelin Starr led the Huskies with 18 points, while Maddie LaFrance scored 14 points in just 20 minutes because of foul trouble. Off the bench, Lauren Kirsch delivered 11 points for the hosts.

Shippensburg returns home for its next game, hosting Millersville at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Heiges Field House.
