SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team put in a dominant performance against Cheyney on Wednesday night with a 116-71 win at Heiges Field House.
The Raiders tied the school record for the most points in a game, equaling the 116 points scored in 1976 against Messiah; and set a new school record by hitting 20 threes. The Raiders had previously hit 18 threes against West Chester in 2020 and Virginia Union in 2017.
Shippensburg (6-14) had seven players finish in double figures. Senior
Ty Holsopple led the Raiders with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Holsopple tied his previous high of four rebounds and made his first career three-pointers, going 2-of-2 from behind the arc.
Junior
Kyle Whippen and sophomore
Donovan Hill each earned a double-double. Whippen scored 13 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year. Hill scored 12 points with 11 rebounds for his second career double-double. Hill went 5-of-5 from the foul line and tied his previous high of four assists.
Redshirt-freshman
Markus Frank scored 16 points, going 4-for-4 from three-point range. Sophomore
Timmy Conner scored 14 points, hitting four first-half threes for the Raiders to set a new career high.
Graduate
Andrew Recchia had 11 points and a career-high seven assists. Sophomore
Trey Martin scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, knocking down two three-pointers.
Sophomore
Denzel Figueroa set a career high with 12 rebounds and junior
Satchel Ball set a new high with five assists. Junior
Michael Dunn had eight points and a career-high five rebounds.
Shippensburg set season highs in scoring (116), rebounding (55) and assists (27). The Raiders had their most assists as a team since a 101-51 win over Penn State Lehigh in 2014.
The Raiders shot 49 percent from the field and were 20-of-40 (50 percent) from three-point land. SU set season-highs in three-pointers made (20), field goals made (42), and three-point percentage. The Raiders also set a season low with just four turnovers, tying the second-fewest ever committed in a single game.
SU opened up a 35-18 lead through the first 10 minutes of the ballgame. A few runs by Cheyney brought the game back within 13 points with four minutes left, but a 13-6 stretch to finish the half put the Raiders up by 20 points at the intermission. The Raiders routed Cheyney in the second half, outscoring the Wolves 53-28 over the final 20 minutes.
Cheyney shot 39 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the arc. Nate Hoter scored 30 points for the Wolves on 10-of-14 shooting and 5-of-5 from three. Hoter had seven rebounds and was 5-of-5 from the line. Chimeziri Okeoma added 13 points for Cheyney.
